Delay/echo recommendations?

Hey, guys.


I'm putting together a pedal board, and I'm having some trouble finding a good delay/echo pedal that does what I want. I tried a T-Rex Replica earlier today, and it was fairly close in that it was very warm sounding.

However, it didn't do the signal degradation thing that I enjoy so much. One of my favourite sounds as far as delay/echo goes is that beautiful oscillating sound/noise that occurs when you have a long row of repeats on an analog-like pedal.

So, have any of you guys got any recommendations for a beautifully noisy, warm delay/echo that preferably is either true bypass or has a good buffer circuit?

The SD Deja Vu is a decent delay . . . you can dial in a very warm analog sound, add modulation to the repeats, and get it to self-oscillate pretty easily. It can be switched between true bypass and buffering as well. Tap tempo too . . .

the carbon copy, memory toy, and memory boy all do what you're asking at reasonable prices, especially when you turn on their subtle modulation settings.

I'm a cork stiffer, so the prices don't have to be VERY reasonable, as long as the pedal doesn't cost an arm and a leg in either investment cost or running cost. (A month's salary per year in buying tape for a tape echo = nuh-uh, no way!)

I need to find a Norwegian dealer that has the Deja Vu, so that I can test it.

I will also vote for the Deja Vu. I own it. (along with a few others) It will be the most flexible and allow you to expand and explore new possibilities in the future. It is a true analog delay and a true digital delay. Best of both worlds. With the wet out feature, you can really have fun. I can make it sound exactly like a Carbon Copy, and I am sure it can match the boy and toy too.

Anyway, your ears are the judge.

i like the trex but now i use the deja vu. great delay pedal, sounds wonderful, tap tempo, cool modulation, easy to use. gotta use a power supply like any delay

Hm. I'm starting to get sold on the Deja Vu, without even having tried it.

Anything that does pretty much the same thing as the delay section of a Line6 PodXT Live, but is partially analog, and of higher quality... Hehe, deadly!

I tried a pile of delays, and landed on the Line 6 Echo Park.



1) Sound quality. It's the best sounding delay I've played.

2) Options: you can do Analog, Tape, or Digital sounds (switchable modes). You have a modulation control that dials in Vibrato in Analog Mode, Wow and Flutter in Tape Mode, and Chorus in Digital mode.

3) Delay time: 2.5 motherflippin' seconds.

4) It does reverse. And it's really cool.

5) It'll do auto volume swells.

6) It'll do stereo ping-pong. Awesome for recording.

7) It does "trails" if you switch them on --- allows you to turn the pedal off, without an abrupt end to the effect. Awesome feature.

i have an echo park. since i got my deja vu it hasnt seen much use and i got a second deja vu rather than using the echo park. ill be selling it soon.

its not a bad pedal at all but doesnt have the same sound quality as the deja vu and i like the seperate tap switch. it does have some features, like reverse delay, that the deja vu doesnt have but i dont use them.

Reverse delay is something I probably never would use anyway, as I have had it on my PodXT Live since I got it in 2006. I've never really used it. The total time I've spent noodling with reverse delay probably boils down to ten minutes or so, if even that.

What I want is a warm, spacious delay that can be both subtle and overpowering.

I love analog delay, and after having tried many, I settled on a Maxon AD-900 purely for the sound of the repeats. It has the original Panasonic bucket brigade chips (ala Ibanez AD-80), and will do roughly 600ms. I keep it set at around 480ms for that ethereal glow around solo lines. It's discontinued and was replaced by the AD-999, which has the current production chips and wasn't as sweet to my ears. Another nice one is the Retro-Sonic Analog Delay, which is based on the classic Boss DM-2, with the advantage of double the delay time, and a footswitch to instantly halve the set time. I'd pick either of these two over a digital emulation of tape delay. The Deja Vu is very good, and has a lot more functions than the Maxon, but to my ears doesn't match it sonically.

I still like the sound of the old Rockman (yes, the Scholz from Boston) models. They're very user friendly, and while they're not pedal format, you can rig them up as such and run them through the effects loop or go straight in.

Visual Sound H2O is very nice. It's not analog but is probably the best 'analog sounding' digital delay I've ever heard. I like it mostly because it has a seperate chorus, which I believe IS analog.

For a straight up delay, I'd go EHX Memory Man
