Deluxe Reverb RI?

How well does it take to pedals? What are it's short comings? I played on one today for quite a while with an EJ Strat and fell in love.

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

the best tones i've gotten out of my deluxe was with the volume at around 7, straight to the amp using my strat's neck pickup. Just a really sweet, smooth tone.

It reacts quite well to my TS9-the pedal fills out the scooped mids of the amp very well and makes for a nice lead tone. Once you break the speaker in, it doesn't sound too bad, even with the neck pickup at high volumes-this gets a throaty tone that is quite pleasing. I just love the amp so much.

My advice if you get one-try jj's-they're only 25 bucks for a pair. Another tip-the chassis gets very very hot because it is a vintage design that wasn't intended for very heavy duty use. I hang a computer fan with an AC adaptor right behind the power transformer-even the light air flow keeps the amp at a very cool temperature, extending the life of the components, and reducing stress on the most expensive parts of the amp (transformers).

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

a Deluxe reverb is a fantastic amp, sounds good clean, sounds good crunchy, has reverb, small, and quite loud to be so small...what more could you ask for?

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

I think there is one for sale on this forum.

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

I'd be happy to build you one... hand wired, no circuit boards... But, it'll run a few bucks more than the Reissue I'm afraid...

The reissues are nice amps, but I'd cut the bright cap on it.

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

I bought one earlier this year and I think it's a great little amp. My only complaint with it's stock form was the Jensen speaker. For what I like to hear I thought the bottom end flubbed out too quick for my liking once I got the volume up a bit. I highly recommend the Hellatone 30 from Avatar. Lot's of folks here love that speaker.
I also built a seperate closed back cabinet to house the Hellatone, which is used as the main. Each to his own but I like the way it sounds. As far as pedals go the one that works and sounds best to me so far is the Barber Direct Drive SS. I've found that pedals with a lot of built in high end (Tonebone Hot British for example) come across with too much "sizzle" with the DRRI. Sounds great in my Peavey Classic 30 but not with the Fender. I like the idea of the two clean channels. I can use one channel for guitars with pedals for the dirt, and the other channel for another guitar used for clean tones. Great amp.

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

i got one probably 6 months ago.great amp.good cleans , and i have no problems with any pedal tones , plenty loud for 22 watts.no regrets . good luck.

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

Thanks for the inuput guys! And Scott......you Irish giant! I may just take you up on that offer after the holidays.

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

I've spent a decent amount of time on one a few years back, with a Fulldrive 2 and a Voodoo Chorus pedal. Both worked great. I've always though that single coils are a perfect match for the Deluxe Reverb-unbeatable cleans and a practical, lower amount of headroom to get that awesome Fender grittiness.
They're never a bad amp to have around, that's for sure!

I don't have the Reissue but i do have a real 65 Deluxe non-reverb model.... The only guitars i like thru it are my Fender strats and teles with stock single coils.... It does like distortion pedals like a Boss ds1

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

Had mine for a little over 2 years. I play it out twice a week every week and it has been on the road for a total of 2 months of touring. I agree w/ others that a speaker replacement is an ABSOLUTE! The Hellatone 30 from Avatarspeakers.com has got a good rep. I myself went w/ a G12H-30 on the recommendation from Dave @ Avatar. I could not be happier!!! It takes my pedals well. Of course, as already posted, it sounds best between 7 and 8 straight in! (once you get a non-flub speaker in there) I recommend!

Sometimes I wish Fender would offer most of their combos as head versions.
I like Scott's idea of having a handwired version of it, but I've also thought it'd be cool to put a Deluxe Reverb in a Showman Reverb type headbox, and use it with closed back 2-12's and 4-12's. I love the amp, but I agree, it sounds tighter through a closed back cab with Celestions.....at least to me.

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

A friend has one. We have tried a buch of pedals and have not been very happy with it that way. But, clean and with a strat it is killer.

How have people swapped speakers? It has 8 bolts. Are you cutting them or soemthing?

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI?

The only shortcomings of the reissue Deluxe Reverb are:

1. Compared to an original from the 60's the cabinet of the reissue is cheaply made and does not use locking fingerjoined corners...it's just a dado joint.

2. Compared to an original from the 60's the reissue is not handwired...it uses a printed circuit board that makes mods and repairs more difficult.

3. The stock speaker is nothing special. I'd install a Celestion G12H30 or Vintage 30 instead. You'll get better, less farty bass when you crank up the amp and you'll be able to gig with it unless your band plays really loud.

Takes to pedals fine...as well as any other Fender amp.
