Nice to see Bonamassa is like that. Angus Young has a similar philosophy. Well he's using PGs now but at least some time before he had that approach to pickups. Nobody went near his guitars with a soldering gun.

Re: DeMartini and Bonamassa pickup info

Good stuff! I can actually see a lot of value in that approach. I go through phases. Like, no tweaking for awhile, just focus on playing. You can get to a point where you tweak so much that you don't play enough, and that's not good.

Thanks for posting these!

Loves me some Warren D. The new RATT album is a great, and his tone is KILLER. They really delivered what they promised.

Joe's also a great player. I'm, anxious to hear his project with Glenn Hughes. I tend to follow his approach with pickups, as we were discussing in a recent thread. Sure, sometimes a new pickup can really deliver what you need, but you can "end up chasing your tail" as he put it.

Lollar makes some good [pickups], WCR makes some good ones, Duncan makes some good ones.
Curious as to which WCR's he's used and how he got them since he's not really into aftermarket pups.

Re: DeMartini and Bonamassa pickup info

I think you can learn from his interview that he just gets guitars that sometimes come with aftermarket parts. I do wonder how his shopping trips look...

Re: DeMartini and Bonamassa pickup info

nice to get some more info from WD on the new album since i've been obsessed with it playing it over and over and over for the past few weeks. loads of great stuff all over it!! that diezel and SLO pair sounds great together!!

i really dig JB too but man do i miss that tone and fire he had on his first album when he was still a strat guy before fender screwed him over and he jumped ship for gibson.

Did a google search about it and read that Fender made a guitar that was inspired by his gold finish guitar without making it his sig. Also read that there's more to it/something different...

So what's the real story?

Re: DeMartini and Bonamassa pickup info

I forgot he played Fenders! Now I remember seeing him in the old Fender Frontlines in the early 90's. He was just a little kid!

Are you sure something happened? Maybe he just decided to go for something different?

Re: DeMartini and Bonamassa pickup info

Just found this.

"Will you explain why you switched from Fender Stratocasters to Gibson Les Paul guitars?

I have a Gibson signature Les Paul, and I will say that I have a certain tone in my head. I've never played Stratocasters exclusively, but people thought otherwise.

I switched because I used to play a thing with my volume control doing a Bach piece. A reviewer at a show responded by saying that it sounded like Stevie Ray Vaughn playing Bach.

I came to the conclusion that it was the Stratocaster. I then decided the Stratocaster wasn't giving me the tone I wanted. When I switched to a Les Paul, it gave me the tone I had in my head.

It's very pronounced in the 600 Hz to 800 Hz region, and other Gibsons (such as a 335, SG and maybe a Firebird) will give that tone too.

The third reason [for the switch] is that Gibson is where my heart is. Sometimes a "Strat" is very strident in the 2 kHz area, but to me it's important to have a guitar that's warm and inviting -- one that is an extension of your voice."

Jim @ WCR said:
He has older Goodwoods, SRs, and a modded DarkBurst set I did for him a year or two ago. Said it was like soldering Paul Kossoff into his LP... lol

Thanx for that Jas ;-)

I hit Jim at WCR up, sent him a link to the interview above. Here's his reply.

Re: DeMartini and Bonamassa pickup info

O like the Bonamassa's and Angus's approach, but there's one thing. These guys always have the best in their hands. For example, if I get a Gibson vintage or even a reissue with PAF's I'd never think of replacing pickups. But my reality is Epiphones and Squiers. Sticking with the stock pickups in that case is totally out of question. What do you think?

Re: DeMartini and Bonamassa pickup info

didnt know Ratt had a new disc out.. Who is singing??? I cant recall the name of the last Ratt disc I got.. Was pretty good.. real bluesy bits on it

That's true, and is the polite version. Lot of it seems to have been the SRV comparisons, but it also has to do w/ Fender, which Joe freely states. Couldn't find the full thread from his forum, but this should give you an idea:

Joe Bonamassa: said:
I honestly feel for Phil cause I know the feeling. This shows the levels of Fender's nonsense.... They copied my guitar and now Phil's. They do it to guys in certain stages of their careers when they feel " What are they gonna do?" Again there is a reason for all my anti Fender stuff around here. As you can see.

Sorry Phil.. and btw..Gibson's play better.

Joe B.

Interesting.

Re: DeMartini and Bonamassa pickup info

Yes, very much so. Not to sound naive, but I always thought of Fender as being a above these kinds of things. I honestly don't recall ever hearing anything negative about them.
