deville problems... floppy sounding

my friend has a HRD he bought new in 2006 and hasnt changed the tubes since then.... am i right in assuming THAT is the reason it's very floppy/flat/fuzzy sounding? i cleaned all his tube connections with no effect.

i had him order the SRV option #1 from eurotubes, since he wants less distortion from the preamp side. we'll see how it works out.

Give us a review when he puts them in! I'm curious, as I had an HRD 4X10 sitting in my basement for two years that I really didn't care for at all. Curious to see if the tube swap helps out.

Btw... it was sitting next to an H&K Triamp Mk I, so it had its work cut-out for it. The Triamp had VASTLY superior cleans and ODs. Smoother, livelier, better. The HRD came-off simply as LOUD and HARSH (OBNOXIOUS!) every time I put them up against each other.

very little goes wrong with HRD's apart from tubes. change the tubes and see what happens, if it don't cure it come back and we'll pick our brains. I cannot remember if the Reverb is Tube driven in them or not.

Re: deville problems... floppy sounding

Aside from tubes, other possibilities that are common to these amps include an open (one of the two) PI plate resistor, a fried power tube screen resistor (again, one of the two) or a fried block resistor on one (yet again, one of the two) of the supply rails that power the effects loop, channel switching and reverb.

It probably needed new tubes anyway so that was a smart place to start.
