Diagonal 2x12s

Soldano make then, Mojotone make them. Anybody else?

Do any of you have experiences with these? How do they sound? I am perhaps looking to scale down from my trusty old 4x12 at some point in the near future (it will make setting a stereo set-up easier too!), but it would be nice to be able to retain some of the visual effect of a classical rig. Besides, I would think that these probably would suffer less of the bass loss commonly associated with 2x12s and 1x12s?

Re: Diagonal 2x12s

I have one that was built locally, and I have a pair of greenback clones in it. I also have open back and closed back baffles for it. The big cab will help make it sound a little thicker, especially with the closed back. I recommend trying a diagonal 212!

Re: Diagonal 2x12s

I love mine. Saxon Cabs built it for me (canadian cab maker, worth checking out). I don't have much prolonged experience with other 2x12 cabs but this one definitely sounds great. Love the fact that the sound isn't aimed at my feed and the wider look is, imo, much better than the straight vertical cabs. Much more like a mini 4x12. With a pair of emi governors this is an amazing sounding cab for all my amps... the fact that it's easy to drag around is definitely a plus...

Re: Diagonal 2x12s

I have an old (late eighties I think) Crate VC212e cab that I got in a trade a few years back, and it's a diagonal 2x12.

As far as I know it's all stock, and it's a closed back. Great for bottom end. I used to use it with my Crate FX65 combo, which stays on when you connect an external speaker, so it added some great "boom" while the combo itself took care of the higher register. By itself, though, it's muddy.

But then too... it IS a Crate! :dunno:

Re: Diagonal 2x12s

I see them in the bass world. Not really sure why they're not popular in the guitar world. Seems like the "shaped like a 4x12, but smaller" thing would be popular.

Re: Diagonal 2x12s

Agreed. I don't mind the 2 speakers side-by-side look, but 2 on top of one another – like ADA did back in the day – looks funny to me.

If you want a actual Marshall cab with the plexi era looks...

Although this is the only current production diagonal 2x12 Marshall makes, they have made them in the past for Silver Jubilee short box heads in both silver and black, and possibly for other JCM 800 short box heads, that show up occasionally on the used market. The external dimensions are about the same as the 4x10 cabs they used to make as well. I have seen the 4x10s converted to diagonal 2x12s by simply fabricating a different front baffle.
