Wondering if someone could show me some definitive diagrams of modern vs. vintage style wirings for gibsons. ie 2 humbuckers w/ 2vol/2tone/3way toggle.
And obviously...what are the differences in how they sound/react to adjustments etc.
This is my understanding of it. Feel free to correct me.
The main difference is that in so-called "50s wiring", the tone control is wired to the output of the volume control, the modern wiring has the tone control wired with the input of the volume control.
In 50s wiring the practical effect is that the tone control does it's thing after the volume pot has adjusted the volume. You can roll down the volume knob and you won't lose much highs.
In modern wiring, as you turn the volume down, the tone control interacts with the volume control's input before the volume is cut by the pot, and you get more high end roll-off just from turning the volume knob down.
with audio volume pots, sometimes the 50s wiring does this thing were it changes the taper of the pot. it feels like the whole volume range is between 10 and 8 and below 8 is almost off. you can wire a resistor on the pot to make it behave more like a linear pot like in this example
I decided to go with the modern wiring cuz i don't really mind the treble roll off, and i didn't want the whole interactivity thing to deal with. I like my pickup controls to be independent of each other.
Great set of articles! For first timers or as a reference. It has just the right amount of technical details to be a complete practical guide without getting weighted down with theory. This will be one of my go-tos... A Sticky nominee for sure

I'll just throw in that its important not to confuse how a tone pot is wired with where it's connected in the circuit. Those are two different things.
The following eight ways to wire a tone control are all electrically identical: (No difference in sound.)
