different epiphone les paul studios?

TENAX

New member
i just bought one on ebay this afternoon...i noted that many have the dots (most common or newer) the one i bought while having studio on the neck, has the trapezoids..part of the reason i bought this one..i'm tired of dots:)

anyone know anything about this? i can't seem to find info and the newer versions all seem to have the dots of the studio?

ps- it also comes with gibson humbuckers which i believe are an improvement over the stock epis which many seem to think are crap?

thanks!

T

Re: different epiphone les paul studios?

I think you got yourself an old les paul studio! I like those better than the current one with dots. I forgot what year yours is... But I think they stopped making those back in 2003 or 2004, because I was planning on buying one of those too when I saw them at a local shop and musicians friend around that time, but when I saved enough for it in early 2004, I noticed they had the dots and I bought a vintage g400 instead.

None of the Epiphone LP Studio's came with trapezoid inlays that I know of. Now, Gibby's they used to. I had one, and early 90's model. Still miss it sometimes.

Got a link to the auction? Pics?

Re: different epiphone les paul studios?

thanks guys...here's the link to the auction..i thought he had changed the pickups from the stock to gibson..i am starting to believe it's a epi studio elitist version with the gibson picksups stock as he says he never changed them out and it came with them. if that's the case, then i think i got a very good deal given it came with the hardcase as well..the elites look like they are quite a bit more expensive.

by the way, he says he bought this one new in 2000.

:scratching head:

I've never seen an Epi LP Studio like that. It's not an Elitist model. The headstock doesn't match those. The Elitists don't have the little dip in the upper right/left corners, unless they changed 'em the last few years. Did he get it used? Double-check those pickups when you get it. Just see what it says on the bottom of the baseplate.

Re: different epiphone les paul studios?

no, i don't think so re: 2005..i've seen other references to late 90s, early 2000 models that came with the trapezoids (studio and studio elite version) and then in mid 2003ish they went to do the dots to save coin on the product..( he could be snowing me on the the gibson humbuckers, but if he was, then it was for no gain as he didn't get a price that would reflect the addition of gibsons..i'm not hugely concerned if it does not as i have a pair of seymour duncan A2 pros that i had in a les paul knockoff that sound great for me and i could put them in there. also, the elites came with the nickel covers (and still do from what i read) where the standard studios don't have the covers. i'm definitely going to check out the humbuckers as soon as it arrives and will let you know!

Re: different epiphone les paul studios?

cool, kaffiman..we'll know when i get it:) my real pride and joy right now is a telecaster 72 thinline in new shape that i paid $500 canadian for with a leather gig bag and strings...got it about a month ago from egay and just love the versatility of this tele.. from playing james taylor acoustic to hendrix to boston to zz top to clapton to ccr..my guitar instructor would steal it from me if i left it laying around in his studio:) it's got the natural finish and is just gorgeous in my eyes:)

Re: different epiphone les paul studios?

That thinline rocks,as you can see i have a `72 tele deluxe.Same pu`s i think.
Pleace let me know what you think about the "widerange humbuckers"

Re: different epiphone les paul studios?

i was pleasantly surprised with the sound of the wide range pu's..i thought i'd have to change them out but i find them very very versatile..tight, not muddy on the hendrix stuff, nice honk when i want it..when i play acoustic stuff, i can get a sound very close to my takamine acoustic electric... all i've got them going through right now is a 15 watt fender amp and my amp sounds better then it ever had..i'm going to stick with 'em and see no reason to switch. someone said to me that they would bar my guitar from sounding like a traditional tele with the humbuckers, but i think it's more in the playing..i can get a fine twang out of this..i'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of a fender power chorus i bought recently off egay to give my tele a really good test with something with more jam..but i love it all around..if i had to limit myself to one guitar, at this point i'd sell my strat, pass on the les paul and keep the tele, honestly.
