Different Individual Mags for a Strat Set

Hey guys. A random idea popped into my head a few weeks back, and I can't seem to get a good answer on it; Let's say I have a basic 3 SC Strat at home. If I wanted a very diverse sound for the pups, couldn't I put differing mags in each pup? So basically, an A5 in the bridge, A3 in the middle, A2 in the neck. I don't see any Strat sets on the market like this, so maybe the variances in tone would be a real mess? Not sure, but before I go forward on my next project, I'd like to hear back from others.

Re: Different Individual Mags for a Strat Set

There was one Fender set that had something like that, I believe it was the opposite though, A5 in the neck, A3 middle, and A2 bridge. I think it might have been for a Custom Shop Strat and couldn't have been bought separately.

What I thought you meant at first was multiple magnets in the same pickup (like the 5-2 for Strat). I once wound a pickup that had A5 under the E and A, UOA5 under the D and G, and A2 under the B and e. It worked pretty well with a wound G string, it might have been better if I were any good at winding.

But I too think that SD should make a set with the magnets, wire gauge, and wind calibrated to each spot.

Yeah, I'm referring to magnets and wind calibration unique to each pickup. I figure that for a tone option like putting all pickups in series for that big sound can sound very muddy. But by having the pickups all vary greatly from each other can introduce a very unique sound.

I'll have to look into that Custom Shop set!

A5 in neck, A3 in the middle and A2 in the bridge would work great with the same wind in the neck and middle, while the bridge should be stronger.

If I had a perfectly calibrated Strat set, here it would be:

First off I'd have them noiseless and with a subtle pole stagger, kind of like what Kinman does with their Strat pickups.

Neck: A slightly hot A5, for all intents and purposes a Vintage Hot Stack Plus (STK-S7n) could work for this slot. I like a nice hot neck pickup for my Strat leads.

Middle: A slightly underwound A3, I use the middle pickup soley for cleans and the contrast between the neck and bridge would allow for good Strat quack in the 2 and 4 positions.

Bridge: Hot UOA5, this would be the hottest of the bunch and it would be used either for twang or an alternate lead tone, hence the UOA5. It has somewhat of an A2 character whilst maintaining a good amount of high end and volume.

I think if done right, this would make a killer set.

We have a forum member here that will work with you for what you're looking for. There probably are other small winders that will do the same. Anyway, here's David's site: zhangbucker.com

Or, you could mix different Duncans to your liking.

Unless the 3 pickups average about 3k ohms DCR each, all 3 in series will be mud indeed no matter what the magnets are.

Re: Different Individual Mags for a Strat Set

There are definitely some Fender Custom Shop only sets (not the CS69, Texas Special, etc.) that have at least two different magnets. Check out the Ancho Poblano and the V-Mod.

The rumor is that the Mayer Black 1 pickups are A5 Bridge and Middle and A3 Neck. One of my Strats is currently A2/A5/A5 and the notch tone is very cool, more complex than dual A5 but more clarity than dual A2.

Re: Different Individual Mags for a Strat Set

Those V-Mod pickups look like a cool concept (A2/A3 neck, A2/A5 middle, and A5 for the bridge) but I here it hasn't fared well in practice. It seems like if done properly it would work right. I might have to make my own set based upon the same idea.

Re: Different Individual Mags for a Strat Set

I plan to make a strat mini for my lady friend with A5 Ant Mustang neck, A2 Ant Duo Sonic middle and ceramic JB Jr neck in bridge.

I have 4 different mags in my hhh strat and I love it. A3 neck, A5 mid, A2,4 bridge.

Re: Different Individual Mags for a Strat Set

Don't forget ceramics either. They might be lifeless in the middle and neck, but I have Peavey stock pickup with ceramic block that sounds awesome in the bridge for rock tones, and blends nicely with neck SSL-1.

Re: Different Individual Mags for a Strat Set

In my experience, mixed mag (5/2 or 5/3) works best in the bridge by far. Neck and middle, diminishing returns. But in the bridge, anyone who hasn't tried it will not understand the following til they actually try it: for the first time it sounds like all 6 strings are from the same guitar...
