Hi and thank you for viewing the thread...

My question is : What locking tremolos are good for metal ? I played Floyds, and Kahlers and I like them but Floyds seem to cut away a lot of sustain, while Kahler Pros does less "extreme" dives...

Which one is your favorite, I am willing to look for Ibanez Edge(s), Lo-Pro(s) and Pro(s) and other tremolos.

If you vote on the poll, please explain "Why'' here.

Thanks, P-E

Been playing Kahler's for 20 years, never looked back. Never been much of a dive-bomber, so that's never been much of an issue, and I always preferred the smoother feel of the Kahler.

Re: Different Locking Tremolos

I've used OFR's, Schaller Floyds, and Kahler flatmounts for years and my favorite tremolo is the...

Kahler 2315

mainly for 2 reasons:

double stops - they work perfectly on a Kahler and suck on a Floyd.

palm muting - I do a lot of this and find it an extra challenge on a floating Floyd, but I can be as heavy-handed as I want on the Kahler.

YMMV!!!!!!!! in the end, it's all personal opinion/experience and the way you play.

I'm with ya on the smoother feel, but confused on the divebombing statement? I can divebomb into the pits of hell with my 2315....as well as pull-up to the heavens :)

Re: Different Locking Tremolos

To me the best floating trems are the original Ibanez edge (or Lo Pro) or the original Floyd Rose. The Floyd has a brighter sound than the Ibanez due to it being hardened steel, but that is a preference thing. However the one thing that makes the older Ibanez superior to the Floyd is locking trem studs. I would recommend them for any floater.

Re: Different Locking Tremolos

I'm a Kahler fan, but I've got nothing against the good ol' fashion Original Floyd Rose!

Just responding to extreme metalhead's statement about the Kahler's 'less extreme divebombing' capablilities than the Floyd. It's a fairly universal opinion that Floyds have a greater amount of pull up an push down than anything else out there, I was just stating that I've never needed to do a full dump on a trem bridge so a little less vibrato range ain't an isssue for me.

Re: Different Locking Tremolos

I've never used a Kahler before, but the only thing I use a trem for is pulling up, so they are useless for me anyway.

OFR ftw <3

Re: Different Locking Tremolos

I like floyds

havent tried kahlers, but am really curious incase I can shove them on any gibsons I like

I just checked them out

GOD DAMN KAHLERS ARE EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sums it up perfectly :headbang:

This statement is more proof than anyone can ever request that you´ve never used one before.

A Kahler PRO (22xx or 23xx series) is the only trem AFAIK that can be set up to have more up pull range than drop range and still not cause playbility issues... and that will literally give you enough up pull to break all 6 strings every time should you so desire ;)

Properly set up, a Kahler will outperform a Floyd across the board. One of the main reasons that players complain about them is simply their own laziness, becasue the downside to having that much tweakability at that level of performance is it needs more maintenance. And this is where most guitarists just plain suck donkey balls, giving them such a tool is very much akin to laying pearls before swine.

If you leave a ferrari in the driveway for 20 years come hell or high water it may have a few coughs when you turn the ignition, too ;)

I use both Kahlers and OFRs, and had been getting used to the notíon of never having a new Kahler for the longest time. I´m also lazy, but not lazy enough that my guitars start to deteriorate, so the Kahler works perfect for me w/ the OFR a close second.

But as far as palm mutes on OFRs go: That´s a technique issue and not a trem fault. Same with the double stops. Double stop and chord BENDS on the other hand are noticably more stable with the Kahler, esp. if you use the heavy springs

I don't like floating tremolos any more, but from what I've tried the Parker Fly tremolo is THE BEST.

Re: Different Locking Tremolos

Thanks guys !
I really like the darker sound of the Kahler 2315 and I'm probably going for it. Not as bright as steel Floyds and they have a nice sustain. Anybody here tried the Gotoh Floyd ? Someone told it was good... I'd like to know a little more. I feel that the most important is the feel of the tremolo so the Kahler's winning for now.

Kahler :sword: Floyd

Re: Different Locking Tremolos

Well I have no true favorite.

But, the trems I like the most are
OFR
Ibanez Edge
Kahler Steeler (great lic.floyd. No longer made)

On thing I've always noticed was that the Edge and Steeler fine tuners had a
smoother feel when turning them.
OFRs always seem to have a courser feel.

I do prefer a pivot trem over a cam trem.
Can't flutter with a cam. :)

Re: Different Locking Tremolos

I like the Ibanez stuff, but I can use and be totally happy with anything that'll stay in tune.

You know, I have used OFR's and Ibanez units from time to time and I really like the Ibanez units. I have no idea how they would hold up 20 years from now but, I did like the way they felt under use. Too bad I dont like the guitars they are put onto.

I of course have nothing against OFR's though and I have never played a Kahler:doh: .
