diffrences between R8 & R9 RI LPs

i'm no les paul expert. what are the diffrences between the 58 and 59 reissues? The 59 costs so much more than the 58. I know that many consider the 1959 les paul to be the holy grail year.... but these are reissues.

Flame vs plain caps; necks (59 rounded vs thicker baseball bat neck).

Tonewise there are no accepted formulae, some R7s kill some of the R9s, .... Depends on the guitar.

when I got my R8 in 2002, there was much less difference since both had flamed tops. just a neck profile difference back then. not too big of a difference in those neck profiles if you ask me.

i just don't see how the price can be that much diffrent in the 2

Re: diffrences between R8 & R9 RI LPs

I know I'd get flamed like crazy on the Les Paul Forum, but who cares, since their forum sucks so much I can't even log onto it....

Gibson has created a plan whereby they've chosen to gouge the upper market. Gibson guitars are mahogany with a maple cap. Any variation of that, plus or minus a little bit of handwork is NOT worth $4000 difference in price. They're outta control, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love Gibsons, have owned many, and will continue to own both Historics and line assembly models, but I'm not fooled by their BS.
I've played $1800 Std's that are every bit as good or better than $6000 Historics. I've picked up 58 Reissues that blow away 59's and visa versa. We're talking about a product made out of wood, not a BMW, not the Space Shuttle Columbia, although Gibson would charge 175 Million for a Les Paul if there were a market of guitar suckers to support it. I guess my point is to play a bunch, pick one to buy, then install some Duncans, get the nut setup, since they don't bother to, and enjoy!

I believe the 59 has larger frets than the 58 and generally more figured tops but don't quote me on this one. I looked into buying a '59 but decided to stay with PRS instead. Its all a personal preference.

the 1 i'm going to get is the 57 black beauty. I was just curious about the price diffrence between the 58 and 59.

Re: diffrences between R8 & R9 RI LPs

I have a 3 pickup Historic Black Beauty and love it, but can tell you that it has a different tone than most other Pauls because of it's all mahogany body. It's dense in the lows and mids and more buttery on top, with slightly less attack. It's a beautiful sounding guitar, especially now, since I installed gold C-5B/59N/59N. It's so hard to beat that combo on LP's. I sometimes wish the 57 Reissue had a maple cap like the regular Customs, tho, just for a little more sparkle on the top end.

Re: diffrences between R8 & R9 RI LPs

I agree with GJ %100! A Jimmy Page custom model cannot sound $7-8K better than a Rossington custom. It is all about the demand side, and the price differentials is not linearly related to the differences in quality.

While I see why gibson is charging (a little on the excessive side if you were to compare an R7 and custom built H150 goldtop, $700 of a difference) more for higher quality (like better sounding wood, aluminuum tailpiece, light wood thus bodies with no weight relief holes etc etc) I cannot find any justification for some of their crazy prices for them "collector's" items. A new LP for $10500 street price, c'moon! (JPs without the signature)

But then again, I ain't a collector! :D

About a fair few hundred dollars...

Oh, and...

Flame (59) vs plain top (58
Necks (59 rounded) vs 58 (thicker 'baseball bat' neck).

Everything else is pretty much identical
