Digitech Bad Monkey Pedal

Ok, has anybody else try this pedal? After hearing some sound clips of it online, I had to try one out and was blown away with it. I'm usually dubious of digitech pedals, but this one was a pleasant surprise for me.

The bad monkey is basically a tube screamer clone for a dirt cheap price. Althoug it's not as thick and rich as the Fulldrive 2, it still has a very good, usuable tone out of it. It sounds like cross between a TS-808 and TS-9 without the thick midrange spike. It's very "open" and less middy. The overdrive is also a lot more subtle than the other tubescreamers. It retains more transparent tone. The bad monkey also has a separate treble and bass pot instead of the usual tone pot of tube screamer clones.

I'm going to order one since musicians friend sells them for $39. It won't replace the original tubescreamers or pedals like the fulldrive2, but it's good (and cheap enough) to add for a different flavor. The first thing I'll probably do is try to add true bypass. I'm not sure if the pedal has true bypass switching or not.

Anybody else try these and have any comments on them?

Re: Digitech Bad Monkey Pedal

My cousin got one a few months ago And was raving about it? One cool
thing about it I see it has some kinda line out feature that could be
helpful? For me... I'll just stick to my Tube Screamer. :D

Re: Digitech Bad Monkey Pedal

I thought it was a pretty decent clone for the $$$, I'll stick to a TS-9 though.

Re: Digitech Bad Monkey Pedal

I could be wrong (and likely am) but I was under the impression that virtually all of Digitech's line was entirely digital and that a hard-wired true bypass in the pedal was impossible?

***Edit: Okay, not impossible, but very difficult and not worth the effort.***

Then again, it's quite easy to make a simple true bypass loop box. Parts available at radio shack for only a little scratch and a lot less headache than trying to solder to a meticulous PC board.

This pedal is getting a lot of good press on the Guitar boards. When guys who drop thousands on a set of pups start praising a $40 dollar pedal, I pay attention. Usually something to it.

All the DOD "re-issues" are analog.

Well kiss my grits and call me Shirley, I was wrong!

Good. I like to be wrong when it's for the better. And it's good to see the Digitech finally realized that digital distortions will almost always sound digital.
