Has any one tried doing this? Im not planning on doing it im just curious becasue to me in theory it sounds like it might sound quite good. If anyones planning or has done this before could you tell me how it sounds?

That sounds like a bad idea to me. All I can say is.......harsh.

Mind you I'm not a Dimarzio fan at all.

If it of any help? all i can say it that dimarzio's seem to be focused in the midrange( low and high mids) and a ceramic will enhance and prodominate mids that are already there?
I have heard that magnet swaps on dimarzio's tend to turn out not so great?

Re: Dimarzio Breed with ceramic magnet

The Breed is quite good, actually.
Will sup'ing it up w/ceramic mag make any improvement?
Hmmm ... if it did, I think that DM would've already started making one, don't you?

I know a guy who has talked to steve blucher over at DIM and he was told that '
before a DIM pup goes into production they try ceramic/alnico magnets in them?
like for instance the tone zone was originally going to have a ceramic in it, but players felt that it was best with a alnico 5.
Blucher had taken the TZ proto over to EVH when he was signing up with ernie ball and EVH said the TZ with a ceramic was "TOO MUCH"
so then steve used a 5 in it and it was much closer to what EVH wanted.
like i said in my first responce DIM's are voiced pretty heavy in the mids when they wind them and a ceramic olny enhances the mids and tightens the bass.
if you do put a ceramic in a breed only YOU can say if it is better or not?
I would think it would sound more "METAL? like for older metallica stuff or testament?

Re: Dimarzio Breed with ceramic magnet

That's my whole point, Sabotage ...
the pup designer already has models in place with the ceramic mag because they sounded better when the pup was voiced for a certain frequency response.
Why mess around with something that was already tried and aborted?

well i guess that some like to hear for themselves?
I in particular dont think a ceramic breed would sound very good in theory but then again i have never tried it?

Keep in mind, the Custom 5 was born on these very boards. Just goes to show that makers and designers don't always think of everything. :burnout:

As well as the hybrids.

I have a funny feeling Dimarzio own a patent over unbalanced coils, which would make Duncan unable to produce hybrid pups, though I'm not 100% sure.

The Pearly Gates comes with unbalanced coils, at least mine do. :burnout:

Re: Dimarzio Breed with ceramic magnet

I've always wondered what my Evolution would sound like with an Alnico 5......

It's already pretty bright....I would think it would end up sounding harsh possibly but I'm not sure.

Evolutions have Ceramic magnets I believe....an AlnicoV may make them sound less harsh and high endy.

I thought A5's made the pickup have more of a glassy high end over ceramic....like the C5 compared to the Custom.

I'm pretty sure that the Ceramic magnet will add even more highs and lows than an A5 magnet.

pretty sure......I'm totally open to being incorrect on that and this is a great place to be corrected.

Anyone want to add to this?
