Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

I had all but deceided on a DD for the bridge of my RG1570 till I found out the mounting ears would require some modification. The triangular shaped ears on the dimarzio's are a direct replacement. Which dimarzio will give me the DD tone?

Re: Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

Buy The Distortion And A Pair Of Metal Cutters (local Hard Ware Shop). Clip The Mounting Ears To Where They Will Fit And Then Take A Metal File And Touch It Up So No One Gets Cut On The Sharp Metal. I Did This To The Jazz And Screaming Demon In My Ernie Ball Petrucci. Easier Then You'd Think.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

IMO, there is no Dimarzio that is exactly like the DD.

Both companies have a sound all their own. Both have a different approach to the eq of pickups.

One of the brighter pickups will get you the closest, Humbucker from Hell, PAF Pro, PAF Joe, EVO.

Even the EVO has alot of bass in comparison.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

NO PICKUP WILL SOUND LIKE X PICKUP, OTHER THAN X PICKUP!

You can NOT get a Duncan that will sound like an EMG or DiMarzio, or vice versa.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

you could send the stock pup to the custom shop and have them rewind it to the specs of the distortion (i'm guessing this is possible but never done it myself)

Re: Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

I would say it match closest with a super II pickup, as they both have basically the same tone charts with high highs, medium mids, and low lows. Both are high output pickups with ceramic magnets. The neck sound demo for the distortion sounded alot like my super II in my strat neck. I don't know if it would sound the same in the bridge. This your call if you want to try the super II in the bridge, this is just what I think matches best.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

You could also buy the DD and swap the baseplate with the stock pup...

Re: Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

just get a dremel or w/e and do some surgery on it~ you wont find a DMZ pickup thats got the tone of the distortion ( ive tried all the dmz humbuckers )

just buy the DD and then use wire cutters to trim the edges of the ears of the duncan
simple and easy for you
there is NO dimarzio that sounds like the DD but IF you must go with a DIM
get the tone zone it is the closest

Re: Dimarzio equivalent to Duncan distortion ?

The Double Whammy with a ceramic mag swap sounds almost exactly like the DD. Of course just trimming the ears on the DD is helluva easier.

I don't know about that one....the DD is very bright while the TZ is very dark. They might be similar in output, though.
