DiMarzio Megadrive question...

Well I just installed a Megadrive in my Kramer Stagemaster (Maple neck through with what appears to be Alder or Maple wings) and WOW... It KICKS BUTT!
However... I put the blade closer to the bridge but the e strings are barely on top of it. The sound is really good but not as thick as it used to be with the Custom. It has more personality and character though.
Harmonics are ****ing amazing. Best out of all pickups I tried. Period.
The pickup is VERY sensitive but not as hot as a Custom. More like FullShred hot, maybe a very little bit more. I don't know its specs and magnet though but it seemed to have been Ceramic from what I saw of it. It reads 14.25K.
Anyhoo the question is, if I were to flip it around so the blade is towards the neck, would I keep the harmonics and get a slightly thicker, less bright sound? If so, I'm sold. But otherwise I won't bother to try :P

Ah **** I just thought (doesn't happen often). The pickup is slanted so if I put the blade towards the neck there wouldn't even be contact with the E string. Would it be bad for the sound?
Any tips with this pickup are welcome.

Re: DiMarzio Megadrive question...

I say try it. You WILL get more output, since the blade is the "hot wound" coil on that pickup. As far as keeping the harmonics, I dunno. I wouldn't worry about string spacing. Give it a go; it shouldn't take much effort.

Re: DiMarzio Megadrive question...

Yep it's a little hotter now. And not as tight. Before it was just WAY too tight, it wasn't thick enough. Now it's not as bright as I'd like but I'll work on the EQ. It does sound better :D Thanks! And the harmonics are still amazing.

Re: DiMarzio Megadrive question...

Yeah, the Megadrive is one bad-ass pickup.....they still make them but nobody knows that they do because they're not in the catalogs or on the website....they should have kept it going.

Hahaha i thought this thread was about putting dimarzios into that sega megadrive guitar!

Re: DiMarzio Megadrive question...

I use one in the neck position of an H/S/H guitar. I have it set so I can select humbucker or either coil. The hot "bar" coil is toward the neck. So when I select that one, it's a big, aggresive overwound single type of sound. I use the allen screw coil mostly when combining with the middle position. That's kind of like having a PAF Pro split with the middle pickup.

My middle pickup is a rails, and I use it split most of the time. The same alternating coil cut switch also cuts the middle pickup, so I have the appropriate hum-cancelling middle coil when in use with the Megadrive.

As a neck humbucker, the Megadrive is hot, but it maintains articulation because of the vastly mismatched coils. It's really a superb neck pickup if you can balance it with a hot, 15k+ bridge pickup. I've tried the Steve's Special in the neck with the same expectations, and it's okay, but not as cool as the Megadrive. I have other friends who have since tried it in the neck and really liked it, too.
