I've heard one before...In the bridge of an SG Custom (3 pup, ebony board)
IMO...too much mids...might sound really good through a Boogie or Fender, but through a marshall type amp, it was just too much mids...maybe in a bolt on neck guitar witha floyd it would sound really nice...but in the SG it was not my cup of tea.
funny you should ask tho...Am gettin ready to order up a Super 2 for my bird...no-one hardly ever mentions either...

I read elsewhere that the super 3 can be comapred to a tone zone only tighter and with more aggression?

I'll offer you the only help I can.
I saw the Queers like a year ago and their guitarist Joe Queer plays his signature Strat with two dumby single coils and a Super 3 in the bridge into two JCM900 heads and two cabs...standing near the front of the stage, all I heard was high piercing Queers poppunk riffs for the whole night and my ears have felt like they needed the treble turned up ever since...sooo i dunno if it's the Super 3 or the two JCM900s to blame but umm my useless cents.

I used a Super 3 for a while in my Carvin Bolt-T and did not like it. I was looking for a pickup with lots of mids to fatten up my bright sounding guitar. Super 3 has lots of mids but it is sort of dull and lifeless sounding. Duncan Custom Custom on the other hand has lots of mids too and sounds very thick but is much livelier and sweeter.
As far as comparing Super 3 to Tone Zone, I had a TZ in the same guitar too and I liked it a whole lot better than the Super 3. TZ has that "open wovel" quack and excellent bottom end. I still like the CC better for beefing up a bright Strat-type guitar.

It's a pickup that's pretty big on the mids:

The top end IS rolled off though so it's really suitable for brighter guitars. It did, however, make my thin-ass alder floyd Kramer sound bigger than my stock Les Paul.
It's thick and it's got grind but it's not going to have that treble presence that most Duncans have. If that bright trebly Duncan crunch is what you want like the JB or Distortion then this isn't really it....the crunch is in the mids.

Ranalli looking at the tone chart it seem as though the super 3 is a tone zone with a backed off bass end?
the treble and mids look about the same as tone zone?

Yeah, however, it's tighter for a few reasons, a bit less bass(still plenty though compared to most pickups), hex pole pieces, and ceramic mags.
The TZ just has this "chewy" feeling that I can't stand even in the brightest of guitars....I don't know...

It's tight, VERY compressed, and smoother than any of the 'dual resonance' models like the Tone Zone.
it's midrange, compression and smoothness makes cleans sounds alot like you're suing an overdrive pedal.
if you leave your OD on all the time with the bridge PU(and are dirty 90% of the time there) it's the perfect pickup.
