Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

Hey all

I have this guitar:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--IBARG321MH

and while scouting the net for a new bridge pickup i fell over a Dimarzio Super Distortion deal.

Would that pickup work nice in my guitar?

Im gonna play high gain through a Bugera 333XL amp. Musical style will be melodic death/thrash (Think at the gates, early in flames, death, slayer etc).

//Edit:
Is the Super D comparable to one of the Seymour pickups, in terms of sound/output? Or maybe a blend between 2.

Super Distortion would work fine, for Duncans the Full Shred would work well, as would the Custom.

Re: Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

I have the exact same model as you. I replaced the stock INF HBs with EMG-81/-H pickups and an SPC mid boost.

IMO, any high output HB with a decent amount of "rip" should do what you desire. You may find the Super D a little too generous in the midrange. Hence, I second dominus' recommendation of the Seymour Duncan Custom, TB-5.

Re: Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

I have the same guitar.
I had the CC, C5, and Dimarzio Norton in the bridge position.

All worked well, but the Norton was the best.
Not sure how similar a Norton is to the Super D, though.
It should work well.

Re: Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

Nope. Regular Norton.
It's probably best for Paul Gilbert style shred stuff, but works for AC/DC to Dimmu Burger.
Really nice upper midrange, but balanced. Kind of sucks for clean.

Re: Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

I've heard people get some interesting clean sounds out of the Norton, but it does have a distinctive character that can be annoying if that's not the sort of clean sound you want.

Distorted, that's exactly what makes it interesting. A bit like the JB that way. Except less picky about what guitars it's friendly with.

I nearly bought a 321 in '08 w a Duncan JB in it.

WARNING : a JB in that guitar does NOT WORK. AT ALL.

To my ears - thin, hollow and ear pearcing.
Should have asked the seller for a discount if i take it without any pick ups.

Re: Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

Super D kicks ass!

For tones, think Kiss, Iron Maiden, even early Slayer and Megadeth (Chris Poland). They might be a little too hard rock/metal and not enough pure metal for you though. A with high gain and a little mid scoop it will do well though.

Re: Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

Not sure if you'll like it. I have the same guitar. I have a Dimarzio Tone Zone in it. a Breed or JB would sound awesome in it as well.

U sure about that ?

It truely sounded pathetic when i tested that guitar w a JB through a 5150 combo.

It had a 250K pot. It sounded good to me. Also, the pickup height was set low from the strings. There are also a lot of factors that could have made it sound "not too shrill" when i heard it.

All of you who had the RG321MH, how would you describe its tonal qualities? Is it a bright guitar, neutral or dark sounding?

From what i can see even though its a mahogany guitar, its not dark sounding at all like for example a les paul.

I hated the over powering tones of the JB's in it . . .

. . . but the guitar itself, was very, very sweet.

Nice fret work, not heavy on the shoulder, smooth action on the knobs, and the general feel of the guitar was very good.
Imho, this is one of the sleeper/under rated guitars of today.

Great value for money.

My 2cents
;)

Mine needed a fret polish, and a good set-up, but with a little work, became a great playing guitar.

Overall, it's a little brighter than I expected. Not a Strat, but brighter and snappier than a Les Paul. Nicely balanced tone, but not very resonant. It's STILL an Ibanez.

So you would still say its a mahogany sounding guitar? Or is it closer sound to Alder or maybe basswood?

Re: Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

In other words, which freq. should i enhance and which should i stay clear from, when looking for pups?

Normaly you would want a bright sounding pup for a Les paul, and a phat pup for an ash guitar. Where would the RG321 sit? I don't have other guitars to compare with, thats why im asking.

Re: Dimarzio Super D in RG 321

Like I said, It's pretty balanced.
It's not real mahogany anyway. it's Nato, or Sapele, or some other asian version of mahogany. Big improvement over basswood, though.

I'd imagine a gibson 500t would rock in this guitar for metal. So would a Duncan Custom or a Dimarzio Evolution.

I hear that the Super Distortion is also fairly balanced, but I've never tried one.

I just got one of these for a Carvin dc127 with a Paf 36th for the neck. I was not expecting what I got from it even though I had a Air Norton before. It has not been long enough to say it is my favorite pickup of all but I am amazed that I never heard of it before. I like it more than the Tone zone and Paf Pro.

Not sure if I feel the same way about the clean sounds. It seems like the most versatile pickup I know of. If the place was not out of stock on the Air norton I might never have discovered it. Good thing I took a chance.

I considered the Super d before but it seemed very hot. The Norton does not push my amp too much so cleans do not distort a lot. The Super distortion sounds like it would be perfect to replace pickups of a Le sPaul classic.
