Dimarzio Super Distortion replacement

I'm about to change a Dimarzio Super Distortion bridge with a Duncan Custom 5.
I know they are completly different pick ups.. but anyone can explain which one can nail more of a classic rock sound? like Skynyrd, Zeppelin, Cactus, AC/DC, Foghat, Molly Hatchet etc..?
I can get pretty good tones with the Super D , but i'm not "In love" with it. Maybe the C5 can give me more of this kind of sound?
I play lots of slide guitar too, and i've got a 496 R neck on my explorer.. which duncan would be a better suit? thanks a lot!

Both pickups will get you classic sounds just in different ways. The Dimarzio was the go to pickup in the 70's, probably by default as the aftermarket pickup was not as popular as it is now. The Dimarzio is crunchy with good mids and decent output but it doesn't sound like a vintage PAF pickup. From my experience the C5 sounds like a PAF with almost double the output, the extra winding add more low end and the mids are not prominent but has highs that usually don't get harsh. People say that the C5 sounds like a hot 59', I would say that is accurate. In the end I think it will depend on what type of tone you want.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion replacement

just good simple old big bad rock n roll tones and hard blues.. fat, crunchy, full, but with enough presence for solos. Basically, Gibson + Marshall classic tones.. i don't want to copy any particular tone..

I gotta say - I'd go with the 59, actually, as a sort of great all around pup. When I see Skynyrd/AC-DC/Zep, that's a range of stuff. I think Fender/Tweed/Marshall amps more so than any pup....Just a thought.

The C5 is great for what you want, as long as you're playing with a lot of volume. If you play through small amps or at lower levels, I'd say the Custom would be the pickup for you.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion replacement

I think the C5 excel with big ballsy marshall stacks and big volume. They are modern sounding with a vintage touch and controllable at high volume. They seemed bland to me with a combo in a bedroom / practise situation.

Hum.. thanks guys..
I'm without a band for instance.. so i've been practicing a lot at home...maybe the 59 combo or pearly gates should suits me better?? I really would like to try the custom 5.. but my mind is open for any tips
