will it do a good Ride The Lightning tone in a poplar guitar? and yes, i know tone mainly comes from fingers and a good amp :p

Re: dimarzio X2N

get a duncan distortion for that tone.. and a '59 neck

but for me, tallica never had that tone for me.. sure, some of them did (like fade to black) but usually they dont float my boat

Re: dimarzio X2N

Forget the Duncan Distortion...too thin for that tone.

The X2N should do it along with a Humbucker from Hell in the neck. That will get the chimey clean tones they have...the '59 is too warm IMO.

But I do think an Invader would be better than the X2N though...but the X2N should be good enough IMO.

Re: dimarzio X2N

well the X2N should do it.
i have an alder guitar with the x2n in bridge and its doing great for 80s trash metal tone.

Re: dimarzio X2N

ranalli .. then would you be suprised to learnt that they used that pup on the albums till master of puppets?

heh.. being too thin my ass. if it can at least shred like the JB it can do everything

Re: dimarzio X2N

davey has a point, the DD actually isn't thin at all and infact the x2n sounds thinner than the DD. hmmm, didnt metallica's hetfield use the invader for that album??

Re: dimarzio X2N

james used the invader on the riffing for at least master and batery. and at about that time they entirely switched to EMG's

Hmm... Could be a pain in the ass trying to balance those pickups. Maybe a PAF Pro in the neck?

Actually I would be suprised...everywhere else mentions Invaders as the pickup they changed to from the stock pickups on their early guitars.

And it kind of makes sense since they have such a huge bottom end on that album as well as Puppets.

The Distortion isn't a "thin" pickup by all means....but for the Metallica stuff with the big bottom end it is IMO.

I never had a problem "balancing" a really hot bridge pickup with a low output neck pickup.

The reason being that for metal anyway I usually only use the neck for cleans...hence a different channel on the amp. The clean channel would get set slightly higher in volume than the distortion channel then your pickups aren't really out of balance. And even if they are out of balance the clean parts are softer anyway.

The only time I've really worried about balancing neck and bridge is if both are used for leads or rhythm and a volume drop would be unacceptable in the middle of a solo. But even then....it's not that that noticeable when dealing with hums.

The reason why I suggest the HFH was it can get those clean Metallica tones ala EMG 60 a little better than the PAF Pro IMO. Although the PAF Pro sounds great too....just not quite as chimey in the clean stuff.

But different setups require different things....find out what works for you.

Re: dimarzio X2N

that big bottom end nowadays comes from the EMG's and an EQ. my JB can do metallica and more, and the distortion is even more agressive.. early tallica never had a BIG bottom end, they were more trebly than bassy. if you take seek & destroy for example.. there's almost no bass on it, but then they pretty much changed sound on ride the lightning and it became a tad more sophisticated. master is a pure riff album and the sound is pretty good.

but something eludes me.. how can you use a dd and invader in your guitar and have such a crappy distortion sound as kill em all? IMO, it pretty much sucks, but i havent heard that album in ages and my memory is prolly hanging on a thread lol

IMO, pretty much any high output humbucker, be it a duncan or dimarzio can do pretty much anything you can imagine. take my JB for example.. it can do it all from battery, over maiden, demons and wizards to ac/dc
