Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

I'm looking for an H-S-H configuration for my ibanez rg to replace the infinity pups. I have guitars with duncans as well as fender pups and i want to give dimarzio a try.

I really love Vai's solo sound so i'm thinking maybe an Evo2 in the bridge.

I still want to have strat sounds in the notch positions as well as in the middle so maybe the area 61 in the middle.

I'm not really sure about the neck humbucker though. I want kind of a cross between a humbucker and a single coil. I want the strong fat classic rock type stuff as well as good blues and a great clean jazz sound because i play a lot of clean stuff. My idea on this one is the EJ custom neck pup. The only thing is that this is a pretty weak pup compared to the evo2 so maybe something like the paf pro might work better.

Anyways, just asking for your guys opinions about these dimarzios. Maybe i am barking up the wrong tree for asking about dimarzios on a duncan forum but we will see. Thanks.

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

Evo 2 is a great pup i installed one in my friends RG570 to replace the regular Evo. The Evo neck is really great, and sounds awesome in parallel. However were it me i would go PAF Pro, such a good sounding pickup and apparently is one of the best neck Humbuckers. I do not suggest the Area '61 i have one and i am replacing it with a vvblues. The '61 has alot of highs which could be good but for some reason also sounds super compressed to the point it just sounds like a crappy cheap stock pickup. Were i you i would go with the Virtual Vintage line. I hear the VVHeavy Blues is supposed to be good, but my VVBlues is on the way so i will let you know how that goes.

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

Yeah, i was kind of leaning towards the evo2/paf pro. I wasn't really set on the area 61 and the vv blues was my second choice.

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

how long u thinkin about waiting to get your new pups, though i do have a ibanez i am putting the vvblues in, mine is alder but i will try to make the best comparisons i can

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

no, i dont have a pic yet although i could probably post one in a couple days if you're interested. It's a quilt top with a transparent blue finish. It's not a prestige or anything, but plays well and i think it looks pretty cool.

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

My current favorite bridge pup (DiMarzio) is the Tone Zone and my favorite neck pup is the PAF Pro. Right now I have the TZ in an alder RG with a Air Zone in the neck, and a pair of PAF Pros in a basswood RG.

I am going to drop a TZ in the basswood and see how I like it, and a VHPAF in the alder.

I know that may not help you much, but that is what I am digging at the moment from DiMarzio.

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

VHPAF is a winner in alder, but i recomend 250k pots it will help out alot. I currently have Bluesbucker (n) flipped with screws to bridge Area '61 (m) and VHPAF (b), with 250k pots sounds perfect for me except the darn Area '61 ::shakes fist::

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

Evo 2 is a good choice for the bridge. For the neck, I usually used the Air Norton, but I think I like the PAF Joe better than the Air Norton. The PAF Joe is very PAF like the PAF Pro, but with much better clarity. Kind of like the how the Jazz is brighter and clearer than the 59n.

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

Consider the Air Zone for the bridge. My main 'bucker guitar is an RG with an Air Zone, and I love it. I'm thinking about a brighter neck pickup, like maybe a Super 2 or Humbucker From Hell.

Re: Dimarzios for Ibanez RG

I really like the Mega Drive in the bridge of my RG750FA. I also really like the Air Norton in the neck of my RG750VP.

Singles still are a difficult thing for me so I won't suggest anything there...

JB, do you have the AZ in the neck or bridge? I have one paired with a TZ, and I still deciding if I like it in the neck.

I have a HFH sitting here waiting on a guitar to drop it in. I want to see how it compares to the Jazz.
