Dime +... SOLID STATE?

hi guys, my computer's been messed so I haven't had a chance to post on here for a looong time. 2 days after dime was shot (bless his godly soul :yell: ) I found out... and I decided to look into his gear, for interest sake. I went to the Randall website and looked at his Warhead sig amp... and I realised it's SOLID STATE??? How the hell did he manage to get such an amazing tone out of a solid state amp? I knew there was SOMETHING about his tone that didn't sound exactly tube-like... and there you go.

So what is the secret to getting such sweet tone out of a solid state amp?

Re: Dime +... SOLID STATE?

There are few solid state amps sound good in my opinion. I had a Peavey XXL and I had zero complaints about its tone. In general, most solid states suck in my opinion.

Dime has ALWAYS played through SS amps...the heavy crunch that comes from some SS amps can be good IMO they are just not very good for clean tones and overdriven rock tones...but for full on metal some of them do fine.

The secret is layering. In the studio, he played the same tracks many times over and over again on top of each other. The sound got better all the time. It rocks too if you make some home recordings. I usually record four rhythm guitar tracks.

i think he was using krank amps as of late(which are tube)

He has used a Randall Warhead for some time now. I am not sure about the Krank endorsement, as I have never seen any shows with him actually using the Krank.

Re: Dime +... SOLID STATE?

Scott Ian has always had a pretty badass tone, and he's a solid state guy as well, correct? I don't put a whole lot of stock in the "Tubes sound good, solid state sucks" mentallity. It really depends on what you're playing. For instance, unless you've got the coinage to plunk down on a Bogner Uberschall or Diezel VH4, I think solid state typically sounds better for low tuned metal. I really dig Tommy Victor (Prong)'s tone, and he's always used solid state Marshalls.

Last I checked Scott's been a Marshall endorser ... I remember seeing a pic of his rack mount a number of years ago and I remember seeing the EL34 100/100 power amps in there

Re: Dime +... SOLID STATE?

I saw pics from the recent tour and he was playing Krank amps, or at least that's what was on the backline.

There are plenty of "low tuned metal" bands out there that use non-Bogner or Diezel tube amps. Mesa, Marshall, Peavey, etc...

Re: Dime +... SOLID STATE?

Pardon me for preaching:

Lots of artists use lots of different amps. That still means they may be an endorser of one type of amp, while using others. They hear something new and want to use it creatively, just like we do. How about that! They use one piece of gear on one song one time, or one one tour, then change things around.

My sister-in-law's boyfriend lives in LA and has a grammy he was awarded as a recording engineer. He was amazed by a solo done by a guitarist in Los Lobos. He asked the guy what he used to get that tone. A Tech 21 Trademark 10, cranked. A solid state product. Remember, BB King broke the Lab series amps by Gibson, a solid-state line. Lots of the other studio guitarists he sees, including Dann Huff and Michael Landau, are exact-o-freaks about their tone, just like Keith Richards, the Edge, David Gilmour, and others. They have multiple effects, things that work with their amps and their guitars to get THEIR sound. Jerry McPherson uses 4 amps for 4 different types of gain - picking them for their killer tones and nothing else. Blackface Deluxe for cleans, Vox AC30TB for a bit of dirt, then Marshalls for the next 2 levels of gain/dirt. If Dimebag only typically uses 2 tones and can get 2 tones that sound good with his brain, fingers, cables, effects, guitar, and pickups, then that is all he needs. The key is not what other people can get to sound good. The question is what can you get to sound good. I think that most people cannot get solid state to sound as organic as a tube amp. But a studio guy like Huff, McPherson, or Landau, will play a mexistrat through a solid state piece of crap better than I can play a Custom PRS McCarty archtop through a Matchless Chieftain.

A big part of it is what is the gear that inspires YOU, as opposed to other people. If it pushes you creatively and makes playing enjoyable, then that is what is going to make you good at what you do. What has mojo for you may not have mojo for others.

You need to have gear that inspires you, that gives you that tone, etc. But you also need to learn how to max out that gear. If you want to be a great musician, push yourself musically, don't keep reading websites about what kind of gear to use or what you SHOULD sound like. Go try the gear to see what inspires you!

Personally i love the Randall/Dimebucker combination!

That's something I could get used to!! Although I'm not a fan at all of the distortion coming from my Randall RG100SC, my Boss MT-2 can kick some ass! I'd really like to try out the Warhead and the Dimebucker.

Re: Dime +... SOLID STATE?

Dime's sound was solid state all the way. Very processed sounding too. I wasnt a huge fan of his sound.
He was a great player though and will be missed!!!

BTW, there are some great sounding solid state amps out there. Listen to King's X. Ty Tabor uses all solid state amps. I think they are Lab Series...
