Dimebucker magnet swap.

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

Only relevant possibility would likely be A8, since weaker mags would diminish its Dimebucker-iness and destroy the point of using a Dimebucker in the first place.

Also, if you don't own an extra one atm, might make financial sense to buy the original Lawrence design it was copypasted from (cheaper) from "Bill Lawrence" (unaffiliated with the real Bill...lol) or Bill&Becky (the real Bill's widow's company i think)

I'm looking to see what happens really. I've an idea that an A5 would be good - lower output but, a good tonal adjustment.

I'm going for a neodymium magnet (although I don't fancy $60 for 2 magnets). Not this side of the holidays anyway.

When I take delivery of ErikH's SH-4, I'll be doing magnet swaps on that - next year.

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

I think an a5 would suck even more mids from the pup...not in a good way either....I'd be curious about an A2...

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

No go the Dime Bucker is epoxied shut.

No, it's just glued down. I took a picture - I promise to put it up in the next day or so - a flat blade pulls the coils out of the plastic base and then just push the wire through the hole and it comes right out.

It's got for conductor wires soldered to a copper tape strip which is attached to the bottom of the magnet and blades.

If the copper 'tape' is removable, I can swap the magnet out and give it a go - it's a testbed for a design that I've got in mind for 2014. If the magnet swap works out, I'll go with the size correct design if not - I'll tweak something else and see if that works out.

An A9 I think would be pretty spectacular - not necessarily in a good way - keeping in mind that the SH-13 gives chainsaw grind and that the A9 also is best for chainsaw grind.

You might end up with more grind than you can handle.

It's certainly possible to swap the magnets but, how well it would work with regular sized magent is debatable.

The only option I can think of is slanting the magnet so that it contacts both blades.

Failing that, buy a huge magnet and spend the next year cutting it and a further month filing it to fit.

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

I believe MJ did a custom Alnico V Dime for some semi-famous players signature guitar.
can't remember the name of the guy or the guitar.

I wouldn't know about that...

But, a magnet swap is certainly possible. Finding the right size would be the problem - though I just bought a pair of N35 magnets for the SH-13 and a custom wind.

If it works out alright, I'll put up a video.

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

I don't get it fully: did you manage to get the bobbins out of their casing?!

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

Hmm.......curiosity is getting the better of on this one......yep, probably going to end up opening up one of my Dimebuckers in the near future.

Like another said above, I'm curious about how an A2 would sound in there........

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

It was for Monte Pittman (Madonna, Prong) and his Jarrell Guitars signature model guitar.

thanks for the assist Evan :)

I know the info doesn't necessarily help the OP with dismantling a DimeBucker but it is some evidence that someone of some repute used a DimeBucker with a Different magnet (AlnicoV) and found it worthwhile :bigthumb:

Inside a Dimebucker. I'm hoping to try out a magnet swap simply to see how it responds with other type of magnet, if it does at all.

I've bought a Neodymium N35 magnet and will try that out IF I can get the copper tape/foil off without damaging it.

If I can and the results are what I'm looking for, I hope to 'promise' you something awesome next year. It'll look cool and sound hot :P

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

A neo mag? Even N35 grade is seriously strong compared to a typical ceramic...

How will you counter the added string pull? "Air" it?

Thank you for that pic, by the way :)

I remember reading the write up about him. He had some special type of finish on his pups like a metallic sparkle. I also remember I realized it's more about who you know that will get you a sweet gig like that.
