Dimebucker magnet swap.

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

A neo mag? Even N35 grade is seriously strong compared to a typical ceramic...

How will you counter the added string pull? "Air" it?

Thank you for that pic, by the way :)

This and isn't it possible that the Neo mag could degauss the mag(s) in the other pickup(s) in the guitar if there are any?

I've got a pickup with N52's in it - I haven't wound the thing yet but, from a pull point of view it doesn't seem to be that desperate on the strings.

It's not like you pluck/strum and the string refuses to move. then again I use HD strings so, they're brighter and more responsive anyway so, maybe this is a reason.

I will stress that I've not wound this pickup so, there is no sound to come from it. When it's wound, I'll do a video.

Also, that these N52's are small 25x8x2mm so, this may also effect the tone/sustain.

I generally only use single humbucker guitars so, it doesn't matter in this case but, good call on that.

Q-Tuner seems to work alright with it - http://www.q-tuner.com/ - though they may use different grades of neo mags.

I'm also toying with the idea of multiple stacked humbuckers if that's even possible. Kind of like a quad rails but, each with rail being stacked - essentially 4 humbuckers in one, active at that.

Inside a Dimebucker. I'm hoping to try out a magnet swap simply to see how it responds with other type of magnet, if it does at all.

I've bought a Neodymium N35 magnet and will try that out IF I can get the copper tape/foil off without damaging it.

If I can and the results are what I'm looking for, I hope to 'promise' you something awesome next year. It'll look cool and sound hot :P

If you do booger up that copper tape, StewMac and McMaster/Carr both sell the stuff.

Not on this particular model BUT, a design for an 8 string that has come from it. Finding AlNiCo magnets this with is damn near impossible but, finding an A9 magnet would, if theory is correct, add even more buzzsaw-ability do an already sharp pickup.

It could be awesome or it could be awful - it's a trade off.

Finding ceramic magnets that width is a little less difficult but, getting thicker ones is.

When I find one, I shall do it.

Just have to write some suitable riffs to show the differences.

I shall post when I have some updates.

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

Right on man, I hear ya. I was just wondering cause this thread is in uncharted territory and it certainly has my interest, as well as many others I feel. Thanks for the fast reply on the status of your work, hope your find something cool to put in it! Best of luck in your quest!

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

Neodymium in a Dimebucker? From what I have heard, your neighborhood dogs will be hating you. Given the characteristics of the Dimebucker, they'll be really hating you.

Re: Dimebucker magnet swap.

I put neodymium in a distortion. My dogs haven't forgiven me and I am not sure I have forgiven myself. It hurt. I mean seriously was like jamming an icepick in your ear.

^^
Lol, I remember your post. Yet, in the world of metal, sometimes that effect is considered a good thing.

Maybe if you were to drop it waaaayyy low of the strings, like sunk below the surface of the guitar by a 1/4" or so.

It made Alexi Laiho's tone sound like Sunn 0))) by comparison. The clean tone even hurt.

This isn't the Dimebucker mod but, it is a mod that I've been giving some real punishment.

So, I've done a little recording which, is part of a track I'm writing just to show off an idea I came up with.

I'd like to see if any of you can guess what pickup this is...

All I will say is that it IS a Seymour Duncan...
