Direct guitar --> POD --> Box --> PC recording?

I don't have a soundcard (or else it's just a generic thing, since it's a wee laptop) on my PC... And when I use a jack cable to connect the POD to the mic input and then right to Audacity, the sound is pretty bad and noisy. What I'd like to do is get something cheap but decent that'd allow me to connect to the PC with a USB cable, with a decent recording program if possible, and that I could use with the POD in front. I'd get the Line6guitarport but it has a lot of things I wouldn't always use. But it's still in the league though. If you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear

pod line out -> direct box -> pc line in, not mic input

isnt that how it should be done?

You could always just go with a PODxt and go usb in.

Way too expensive, even if I sell the 2.0 and chip in the difference. I could maybe get 100 for the 2.0, then that interface would cost me 80 or so.. I'd still be about 50 pounds short at least.

Line6 just came out with something called a toneport. They are modelling interfaces for your computer that connect with the computer using USB ports. They come with recording software and modeling software. The smaller one is liek 150$ and the bigger one is 200$. check out the Line6 website, there is a lot more info there. If you can afford it, buy the toneport and keep your POD, this way you can record just using the toneport, or record your POD through the toneport, and still have the POD for running in front of amps or PA systems for paracticing and live use.

Get a used guitarport. It's cheaper than anything anybody has suggested and I'm pretty sure you can bypass the amp/cab/mic modeling and basically use it as an audio interface for your recording software.
