Distance between Tune-o-Matic Bridge and Tailpiece

Does it really make a difference? I saw a Chinese made les Paul yesterday and the distance between the bridge an tailpiece was more than on a regular les paul. Apart from sustain, does this affect tuning stability or playability in any way? Just curious to find out.

Thanks

Well, even Gibson is inconsistent on what the "correct" distance should be.

It would make a difference in the angle that the strings contacted the saddles and therefore the string tension in the same way that top-wrapping your strings does. Other than that though, I don't know of anything.

Re: Distance between Tune-o-Matic Bridge and Tailpiece

Gibson has made at least two bridges & the distance between the bridge and tailpiece varies from one model to another. The bridges are the vintage style ABR and the Nashville style. The Nashville has a tendency to have the strings rest on the back of the bridge. Some players wrap their strings over the top of the stop bar to eliminate the strings from breaking due to touching the bridge. Personally I think there is less sustain due to the break angle but that's just me. I have tried it both ways and haven't really noticed much difference. I really do prefer the ABR style bridge I think they perform better and I feel they make better contact and sound transfers better and with more clarity

Re: Distance between Tune-o-Matic Bridge and Tailpiece

Lots of guitars with TOM style bridges have had lots of different distances between bridge and tailpiece.

As an example: The Guild guitars Kim Thayil uses have a huge distance between the two pieces.

The differences are basically just 1. String tension and 2. The amount of noise/pitches produced by strings behind the bridge.

It has at times been inconsistent.

My '04 LP Standard and my '83 LP Custom measure 1-5/8" treble side and 1-1/2" bass side (center to center).
