Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set sound problems

Sick

Hi Guys,

I recently got me an Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set. I gave my guitar to a guitar at my local guitar shop. After getting my Guitar back. The Sound of the picks was very bad, it's like the pick ups dont get enough gain and it sounds like i got an Semi Distortion Sound. Im using a Ibanez GRG121DX and the stock picks sounded way more aggressive.

Now, i think he got the wiring wrong because the tone knob if turned down, takes away all the gain and i get a Clean Sound. Witch wasn't the case with the stock pick ups. I was kinda mindblown by that to be honest.

If someone could point me to the right wiring diagram, it would be much appreciated. I found the diagram with 2 Humbuckers - 1 Volume - 1 Tone - 3 way switch. But i dont know if its the right one.

That dude was an idiot. That should be the right diagram.

Re: Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set sound problems

Got any pictures? The first issue *might be the pickups are too far from the strings. The second issue with the tone control sounds like you might have a bad case of 50s wiring. Does the guitar lose any treble when you turn the volume down?

Re: Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set sound problems

It might be a bad installation, or pickups set too low, or a pot that went bust during installation.
In any case, your tech was incompetent and you should consider not taking your guitar there anymore. It wasn't tested properly.
Did they let you check it at the store before taking it home?

Welcome to the forum!
I am sorry the pickups aren't working- I suspect the wiring. Several detailed pics will help us diagnose the problem. Check out this diagram as well.

Re: Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set sound problems

Hi, thanks for yor answers.

The guy at the shop seemed pretty competent. So i hadnt thought much into it. Sadly i'll have to bring it back or its 50 bucks wasted D: .

I tried adjusting the pick up hight but sadly it made no real difference. As for the guitar electronics, everything was fine before. Volume and Tone worked without losing any sound.

Im Currently at work and cant post any pictures, if i'll get home im gonna post them up.

I looked up exactly the diagram that Mincer postet here, so i wasn't too far off.

I didnt playtest the guitar because the tech said i should pick it up right before they close. So i couldnt play test. That was probably dumb on my side.

The soldering looks very cold.. and not Shiny.... besides that I can't tell if it has been wired properly. .. how does it switch do you have 3 way switch or some splitting options on the switch

Re: Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set sound problems

Its a 3 way switch where i toggle between both humbuckers, neck or bridge. It's pretty standard i guess.

Re: Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set sound problems

I got that I checked out the Ibby website. Is the red and white from each pickup joined and soldered together like in the link Mincer gave. Black should go to the lug on the switch and green ground with the braided wire.... the soldering does look very poor.

Re: Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set sound problems

As far as i can see the red and white wires from each pick up arent taped off, i also got 2 green wires hanging around unsoldered, one from each pick up.

That is the problem the green wires along with the braided ground wire need to be soldered to ground.

Re: Distortion Mayhem Humbucker Set sound problems

Thanks for all your input guys, i brought the guitar back to the tech and he apologized for the wrong wiring. He also said he kinda had the wrong diagram up so he is taking a look at it now and the guitar should be fixed by tomorrow.
