My good friend has been pluy a new amp aying guitar for about 3 years and loves the heaviest of the heavy tone not thin crispy tone. His budget does not allow him to buy a new amp so pedal shopping we go.

Problem is i have been out of the pedal game for a while and have no idea whats heavy and whats any good. Please help if you could post a sound or youtube link it would be great. we are going friday after work to look.

thanks in advance

already tried it and it was very un impressive no where near the gain it shows online

Re: Distortion pedal question please help

Any of the AMT Legend Amp pedals. (S2, R2, P2, B2, E2, etc.)

Re: Distortion pedal question please help

For my "heavy" tone I love my BOSS Mega Distortion. Throaty and growling but never muddy. Uber bass and awesome on my leads. It is like a DS1 on steroids.

Re: Distortion pedal question please help

Thick, meaty, distortion with a tight/loose mini-toggle switch.....no thin fizz/buzz..very versatile and will give you some great Metal tones without breaking the bank..

AMT.

Not a big heavy distortion guy, but I got the Diezel (D2) pedal for some Tool level gain. Well I get that at about 10-oclock with medium output pickups. The bass thump is extraordinary too. Sounds like a 4x12 even though its only going through my 1x12

Re: Distortion pedal question please help

The only thing: you need an effects loop on the amplifier to get a good sound from the AMT pedals. Unless he has a power amp of some sort that he can plug it into.

Re: Distortion pedal question please help

Most fuzzes will give you a heavy tone, but I think the SD Lava Box is a great pedal for any budget (local guitar center is selling it for $40, when I get the money, I'm getting it).

Re: Distortion pedal question please help

My multipurpose distortion pedal is my soundbloxpro Classic Distortion. With the built in eq and noise gate I can dial anything in. Check out the metal setting on one of these babies. It will peel the paint off the walls and you can program 6 distinct tones into the pedal. I was finally able to move my MXR Distortion+ and my Boss Mega Distortion off my board and I have some great gritty fuzz tones.

Here is my review of the pedal from my blog

Has your friend tried a Boss HM-2?

Not bad for $80 or so..super saturated, tight wall-of-sound gain. I'm thinking of getting one myself...not that I need it lol...just have a thing for cheap(er) distortion and drive pedals..

and the mother of them all...

wish I knew how to go about buying one though :p

Distortion pedal question please help

I have an MXR Distortion III I bought used for 40 bucks. To my ears it sounds better than a lot of the boutique stuff and will give you nice brutal crunch while keeping your low end.
