Ditching Actives! Time for a big Change...

For the last 2 years i've really been advocating either high output ceramic dimarzio pickups or in one particular guitar, EMG's. But I tried my brothers Ibanez RG (exact same model as mine) which had stock medium output ibanez pickups I think with an Alnico 2 or 5 neck + an Alnico 5 Bridge.

During the 5 minutes I played it, I fell in love with the feel and response of the pickup, particularly the neck... Bridge was a bit weak... BUT it was something I hadn't experienced in a long while! I feel like i've seen the light now. Jesus, the neck HB had this really squishy yet glassy chimey sound, almost stratty sounding but without the buzz and a bit more volume. Even the dimarzio's I have dont really have that kind of dynamic response/bloom and open top. Everything is squashed and focused and vocal.

I'm going to keep all my dimarzio's but man, the EMG's have to go.

I have decided to go for a 59/CC hybrid in the bridge (perhaps I could slap an Alnico 8 in there instead ?? thoughts?) , but what about neck reccomendations ? I dont want any more warm dark super smooth neck pickups.
I want something with that 'sweeter' gritty yet dynamic kind of sound. Basically the complete opposite of say, an Air Norton !! I like when you are soloing on the higher registers and the when you pick the string hard or do a big string bend it kinda sounds like a wah pedal going through a full sweep... as opposed to a wah pedal permanently stuck 3/4 of the way down like ALL dimarzios sound.

I think I tried the Jazz neck once in a friends charvel and I dont remember being wowed by it, but that was in my super distortion + delay/chorus period.

I love the Hybrid just as it is. It has a great combination of power, dynamics, and a great EQ. As far as the neck pickup, look at the Sentient as well as the Pearly Gates. They are slightly different, but different than the Jazz as well. Both have clarity and work with most levels of gain.

Welcome to The Church of Alnico!

I'd say throw the A8 in a 59/C and put a Pearly Gates in the neck. If you stick with the A5 in the 59/C the bridge will be way to bright in contrast to the neck, making it tricky to EQ your rig so they work well together.

I'm non-denominational. I love A2's, A5's, A8's, Ceramic, and the occasional active.

As for the 'No Air Norton...." I can't abide by that!

I say go for 59 neck. Bottom, top, and matches C/59 in obvious ways.

The neck pickup you are describing is the PAF Pro. It matches well with an Air Zone or Tone Zone in an RG.

Re: Ditching Actives! Time for a big Change...

Dimarzio passives are THE pickup for RGs.
The EMG 81 can sound thin, sterile and cold in an RG. Not very expressive, just straight up hifi metal sounds.

Before ripping all the active wiring and pots out though, I strongly suggest trying the EMG 57/66 set. They have all the positive attributes of actives but with very convincing old school PAF qualities.

No, not the 57/66. Try the EMG super 77. Seriously! They have that gritty, squishy DiMarzio-vibe you are describing. Lower output than 81/57/66/85/het set, more open, and not as «stiff». Have the approx. feeling when playing as a JB/Jazz IMO. Try it first. No need to change out wiring and what not, just plug ‘n play. [emoji4]

The Sentient IMHO is Duncans best pickup that I have tried. Liquid violin leads, not too dark so blends well with the bridge pup. I have it in two guitars and love it in both. I cant recommend enough, its a KILLER!!

I should have mentioned I do have an RG with PAF Pro in the neck but for some reason it doesnt quite have the 'response' im looking for. It also is a little narrow sounding and the doesnt really have that stratty attack. Great for fast picking leads and choppy but in this guitar I'd prefer something a little 'chewier', lower output with less bass would be perfect.

Re: Ditching Actives! Time for a big Change...

The only Ibanez I've liked the 81 in is my Giger rgt, which is a really deadened, weighty, dark and low-mid thunky specimen.

The 81 has been just crap in the bolt-on basswood Ibbys I've tried, though you can always use the right booster (if set right of course) and make it OK.

If you want chewy in the neck, my first two thoughts are the Air Norton and the Jazz.

Granted I have not played a Jazz in a bolt-on RG style guitar, only in set neck and neck-through, warmer axes (Schecter and Ibanez LP clone). But it can do the sparkly bell thing, maintain lots of clarity when you roll off the tone even with more gain, and through my rig it gets plenty chewy.

I've found it responds to pick attack such that if I dig in and snap out a single note, I can achieve a cutting chirp, and if I'm not going for that it will stay round and clear. And for chords I find it gets gooey but still pretty clear. Definitely has that A2 squish in the mids but is firm at the same time. Throw a boost on top of it and I think you would get close to what you're looking for.
