Made some removable absorption panels today. They are held in place using 1lb suction cup hooks.

PARTS

Lots of newspaper fliers
1x box of 24 1' x 1' Auralex wedge panels
1x can of Auralex spray adhesive
2x 2' x 4' pieces of 1/16" masonite/hardboard
Nail polish remover
24x 1 lb suction cup hooks

PROCEDURE

Cut 1-1/2 masonite boards into 1'x1' squares, and marked the center of each backing piece
Lay out newspaper close to an open window
Lay out backing panels and absorber panels (I did two at a time)
Apply adhesive to backing and partially onto absoroption panels
Wait 30 seconds for adhesive to tack
Apply panels to backing masonite
Let dry
Hang assembly from 2x suction cup hooks at desired location

Re: DIY removable absorption panels

Those look decent. I've DIY'd acoustic panels, but was never able to find aurelax stuff for reasonable prices. You can use Owens Corning 703 (Rockwool insualtion), just build a simple wood frame out of 1x4s, cut the insulation to size and wrap with cheap fabric. This works very well too.

Re: DIY removable absorption panels

It certainly does, but requires actual tools, and a lot more space. I live in a NYC apartment; everything has to be compact and the only tools I needed for this was a ruler and utility knife!

Ahhh, I misread. Darn  I was looking too hard for affordable DIY soundproofing ideas.

Re: DIY removable absorption panels

This is not soundproofing. This is high frequency absorption to remove time smearing which affects imaging and perceived frequency response when mixing.

I hate it when time smears my perceived frequency images!

Update:

Turns out, suction cup hooks DO NOT work on painted walls.
However, removable pucture hangers work great!

First step was to number the panels so the velcro on the back of the panel will line up with the part on the wall.

Getting the panels up took just a few minutes this way.

Unfortunately, soundproofing a room involves a lot of the same principles as making a room airtight. There aren't a lot of approaches that are both effective and inexpensive.

Re: DIY removable absorption panels

After a lot of experimenting, I finally found a way to get my DIY panels onto the walls in a way that they will both adhere and be easily removed. Turns out that suction cup hooks are no good on painted walls. However, 3M makes removable velcro picture hangers that work perfectly!

I now have about 42 square feet of acoustic panels up and the most surprisingly effective piece is the DIY cloud on the ceiling; to my ears, this made the single most profound effect on the space.

The Dining Room now sounds like an actual acoustically-serviceable space. :) and the best part is that it's all removable in a matter of minutes without leaving a trace!
