DL-4?

Once, about 12 years ago, I owned a Digitech delay. Aside from that, all my delay experience has been from a multi-effects or built into a modeling amp. Selling some unused stuff, gonna have about $150 to play with.

Part of me says keep it simple, but I sort of wanna go hog wild. Is there any reason a second-hand DL-4 is the wrong choice?

Re: DL-4?

The Line 6 DL4 was introduced 20 years ago and Jeorge Tripps had a hand in designing it. It’s been on quite a few albums and tons of tours in that time period. It’s easy to use and sounds great. A true classic of the stompbox world. The only issue is the crappy switches, if the pedal in question is older, it may have some troubles with a few of the switches. They can be repared, but that’s annoying....

If the switches are good and you like the sounds, go for it...

Re: DL-4?

I'm looking on Reverb, so I'll ask before buying, and inform the seller if the switches are screwed, I'll be returning it. However, I'm not afraid of soldering, so...

Thanks, man.

Re: DL-4?

Indeed!
The switches will eventually have to be replaced, but the sound of the pedal itself is gold. It is a great looper, too. Certainly worth it if you find one at a good price.

Re: DL-4?

Is there anything more difficult about replacing the switches on the DL-4 than any component on any other pedal?

Re: DL-4?

Well, it is surface mount stuff, so it is easy to lift the traces off of the board. There are companies that will do it for you, too. Line 6's footswitches are problematic on most of their gear.

Re: DL-4?

Man - you have to ask??!?!?!?! That is an epic delay pedal!!!

I wish I had one. Three presets, a tap tempo, an expression pedal, stereo ins and outs, and some serious delay models, like a LOT of models....not that you really need more than tape, analog and digital.

Not familiar with the switch issue - but shop until you find a good one. Then go hog wild!

Re: DL-4?

I have a DL-4 on my board and bought mine used, too. It's a good module with a lot of echo choices, I've been using mine to run two amps in stereo. It had have to have a couple of switches replaced, and there are higher-quality switches available on the after market.

Re: DL-4?

You may also want to consider a Boss DD-20 at that price point.

Bill

Can you compare the two?

Don’t really need a crazy in depth comparison. A looper would be fun, but I don’t really care about the specific functions. Just wondering if there are any huge, dealbreaker things. The junk switches on the DL-4 are something I care about, for instance.

Re: DL-4?

The looper on the DL-4 is much easier to use- and you can use delay at the same time. The looper on the DD-20 requires you to hold down a pedal while recording. You always have instant access to tap tempo on the DL-4.
