do floyd roses ALWAYS bend the pitch up?

What I'm specifically asking is does the tremelo need to be in a recessed cavity in order to be able to bend the note up?

Re: do floyd roses ALWAYS bend the pitch up?

No, but you'll be able to pull it up alot higher if it's recessed. In a non recess route you make get a quarter step up, if it's not flat mounted on the body

Not entirely true. Some guitars have the entire floyd floating a few mm above the body, most notably many SD-era Jacksons and most Tune-o-matic-> Floyd converted axes. On these you can pull up just as high as with most recesses ;)

True. I have a few 80's set neck Hamers with Floyds. They built those with the neck at a slight angle to the body like on a Les Paul, so the Floyd is sitting higher up off the body. There's no recess, but I can pull way back on it.

If you have a bolt-on you can shim the neck a bit to make it angled and raise the bridge from the body, but if the part where the springs attach is already hitting the body it won't do you any good.

Why do people have so many problems with Floyds?

I had my one boss ask me one day how I played my Soloist with the OFR on it and I always see complaints here... wtf?

Same with my kramer. It sits pretty far up off the guitar even with ultra low action.

I have all the range I could ask for.

IDK. I love my Floyds. My wolfgangs stay in tune better then my american strat. Although my wolfies are set to the body and my strat can bend up.
