Do I Have a Pick Up Issue?

When I move my pick up ground wire it sounds either extremely weak or full strength. Move it around, press on it, it might sound fine. Move it again, its weak. Here is what I've tried.

  • Replaced both bots with multiple sets. I thought it was the pot (Both volume and tone)
  • I replaced the switch too because I thought it was the switch
  • I did replace the jack recently but I knew that was an issue
  • I have tried to ground it on multiple pots, both volume or tone, and in multiple places

This is driving me nuts, and I bet its something simple. (I hope) Maybe its something beyond the pick up? Some nuance I'm not seeing? Is the pick up messed up? (It's a PRS Tremonti pick up) It will happen with the neck pick up too, but if I move the bridge ground around both pick ups are fine. (or not).

Any ideas are welcome, I'm stumped. I've completely rewired several guitars and never had this issue before. The wiring scheme I'm using is two hums, one volume one tone, 3 way toggle.

Thanks guys.

sounds like a bad connection or wires crossing without you knowing

Cold solder joint.

Re: Do I Have a Pick Up Issue?

Does it matter if you move the ground wire on pickup end or other end? Have you tried to cut the wire and resolder it on grounding point?

It sounds like the wire or solder has snapped on the wire end. If it's on the pickup side, I'd suggest to take it to tech, unless you're willing to risk damaging the pickup trying to repair it.

Re: Do I Have a Pick Up Issue?

Probably a long shot, but I just had a customers LP bite me in the bum on this one. Make sure that neither of the pots has spun around, (as when tightening them), and shorted one of the lugs into the conductive paint in the control cavity. (Assuming your axe has conductive paint.) IT's usually not ever a dead short, but unwanted resistance.

Re: Do I Have a Pick Up Issue?

Thanks guys. I'll look at everything and Artie I'm going to try looking at the lugs. The cavity is really tight, so this could be the issue. It's frustrating because I have completely rewired many guitars and never been this stumped.

Re: Do I Have a Pick Up Issue?

Apparently I had one of the wires grounded on the pot, but because the pot was so snug the solder and ground was touching the side of the cavity. Hence the issue. Thank you everyone for your help!
