do I need a fret job?

My Ibby AS-50 (semi-hollow 335 clone) is bone stock, save for the tuning pegs. I've been having some high E string problems; if I strum too hard, it hangs up on the outside edge of the 5th fret (the 'A'). The frets haven't been re-crowned or dressed in any way.

Is this a fret issue, or can I just tap the edge back in with a wood block and hammer?

Re: do I need a fret job?

Can you post a pic of the offending fret end?

Tapping it may raise the other end so you may have to clamp it.
It may also need some filing back.

Nope, more than likely you've got a loose fret end that isn't loose enough to cause fretting out, but enough to catch a string. A very light tap with a hammer should fix your problem without an problems. If you need a little more than that, some water thin superglue wicked into the edge of the fret slot and the fret pressed down you'll be in good shape.

No pics yet; I'll try in a few hours (1:53 AM local time). Need to catch some ZZZ's.
G'night!

There may be a particular obvious one that's bad enough to catch a string, but loose fret ends rarely travel alone. I find these cases typically benefit from all the frets being re-seated and glued, which inevitably should be accompanied by a fret dress as well.
