Do I need a tone pot?

Re: Do I need a tone pot?

I can definitely notice a difference in brightness between no tone pot (or a modded no-load pot) and a pot on 10. That said, the difference can be subtle, and since I quite often use the tone pot, I don't know that losing the tone pot is worth it. In any case, I agree with a couple of the other guys that brighter doesn't necessarily equal better, unless your tone is muddy enough that the difference in brightness equals a difference in clarity. In any case, I usually end up EQing out the differences...

There's no unambiguously "right" answer, but if you don't use the tone pot and crave some extra brightness, taking out the tone pot is definitely an option :)

Re: Do I need a tone pot?

Man I use 1 megohm vol and no tone pot for a lllong time ,and it's really a big difference.
I even considered to connext the PU to jack directly ,and use a volume pedal.I have to give that a try i guess

Re: Do I need a tone pot?

I like adding a tone pot bypass switch. It gives me the option of getting that brighter bypass tone when I want it. Makes a nice little change in emphasis for leads.
