Do pup's tone change with age?

Re: Do pup's tone change with age?

After playing both pup's over the last few weeks I'm convinced that older pups have more MOJO. Warmth, fullness, less mag pull, whatever.......Now I'm on the hunt for a old Custom or Distortion. :burnout:

I think you should stop being so obnoxious and reread my original post because your contadicting yourself and actually supporting my argument that the environment actually helps to demagnetize the magnet. Plus using multimeter to test magnet aging isn't helping to build your credibility.

Obnoxious? Okay....you da man. I've been called worse....lol....You are obviously much more knowledgeable than I when it comes to the electronic theory behind guitar pickups (and actually, I mean that), and psychic to boot! How else would you know all about my JB pickup without having it in your hands?
You are awesome, bro!

Congrats!

Re: Do pup's tone change with age?

Thank you but reread my original post - #15.

1st sentence: Probalility of situation
2nd sentence: Statement
3rd sentence: Personal experience

First you gotta say "Please."......lol

1st sentence: More like "possibility" of situation. Again, without having it in your hands you are only assuming something that may or may not be true.
2nd sentence: Could be true; but unless you kept a JB or any other pickup in your house for 30 years and then compared it to a new one, your statement is unqualified. Did you buy pickups when you were 4 years old?
3rd sentence: I can go along with that one.

One out of three ain't too bad....lol

Did I state that I measured magnet strength with a multimeter? No. You insinuated that. So tell me, how did I damage my credibility? You're the only poster in this thread who felt it neccessary to sling mud in post #19. If there was any "credibility" to be lost, I think you were the one who lost it....at least to this forum member.

My advice to you: Try to curb your flaming attitude with the manner in which you use words like "obnoxious" and "credibility." Very tacky.

This post is pretty much off topic at this point and I beg the pardon of my peers for getting off the path here a little; but motorhead, you made some accusations that I felt were unfair and not very constructive. If you desire to educate someone about something (I'm always open to helpful information), it doesn't make any sense to start out by insulting your pupil.

Best regards
....Bob

Start out !? I've been on this Board for years and already have a repuation for knowing my stuff - I just spend a lot of time responding to Personal Messages. Who's assuming things now? I own every Duncan PU ever made ... including the Silverbirds, Allen Holdsworth, etc...

I still think your obnoxious with your need to add "lol' everywhere and your last post is simply full of air since there is 'Pickup Theory' available ... just spend some time with any PU maker.

You did save face in your last post but we both know what you meant with a JB measuring 16.25K since you brought up DC Resistance in a thread dealing with magnets. If that's not what you meant make your posts clearer and don't get all huffy and snooty (post #16) if someone tries to give you an alternative view.

I wasn't attacking your precious 30 year old JB. Again, I'm agreeing with you but for a different reason. You just can see that.

No, actually I see where you're coming from loud and clear....and if you can't take a joke as post #16 was partially intended, well you know the rest....LOL (think what you will about the lol's....lol)
You may be a long time member at this forum, which is irrellevant, and you seem to know something about pickups since you "own every pickup Duncan ever made" (you must own a lot of guitars!), but if there's anything I learned from you during this thread it's that you may know a thing or two about guitar electronics....but your manner in relaying that information to me is much less than tactful. I can handle anybody's corrections to what I may be mistaken about (and welcome it at any time), and am always trying to glean as much information as I can from all at this forum....including yourself. No one likes to be called names and I chose to express that to you.
Should you choose to use a little more diplomacy next time around you might get a more positive response from someone like me (do you care?). If you don't like what I type, don't read my posts. You're the only one who has taken any kind of exception to what I wrote, and you tried to brag yourself up while doing it.
I'm not sure what you're trying to prove here except that maybe you're just trying to have the last word or something, so I'll just leave it all where it lays. I will not stoop to your level by name-calling.
I'd rather spend energy doing something more meaningful than reading your demeaning responses.
As I said before, motorhead, "you da man!"..................LOL
So, have your last word and let's move on....shall we?

p.s. By the way, I edited post #16 so as not to make it appear I was putting you down in any way, which was never my intention. Sorry you were offended!

Re: Do pup's tone change with age?

Lew, how long have you had your surfers? Since they are slightly demagnetized, will the magnets ever fully demagnetize? i have a pair that i got off my friends strat that he sold and wonder if their tone will improve/get worse. And are alnico II's more prone to demagnetizing?

Does a pup's tone improve with age or ?

The sound of a pickup does change with age. Whether it gets better or not is purely subjective and mostly a function of aesthetics. While the half-life of magnets may be the cause of debate the fact remains that wire can stretch over time; a pickup that wasn't potted will sound different in a number of years because the coilings have indeed stretched.

The problem really exists to have a definitive answer to this because were unable to really make pickups to the exact specs that they once were using the same materials and techniques. Even folks that wound them back in the 50's usually aren't doing it (the exception being Abagain Yberra) anymore so it's impossible to have a control group.

To my ears the pickups seem to mellow with time. My 73 Strat isn't nearly as hot as my 90's Strats and I find the sound to be more pleasing.

Besides...we tell all these vintage guys that there's nothing special about their gear we'll collapse their whole market!
