Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Seriously, when two people play and one of them sucks, nobody is gonna go, "Yeah, that guy can't play worth a crap, but look at that amp!"

Absolutely. Only a few gearheads would be impressed by the guitar & amp. And we'd still say: "But he can't play them worth a crap. What a waste." And we probably would have a lower opinion of that guy because of it. What really matters is what's in a player's head and fingers. Talent is a lot harder to come by than walking into a music store & buying the expensive stuff. Everything doesn't magically fall into place when you aquire high end gear ("I was held back because I didn't have a $3,000 guitar"). I've seen some fantastic players do things on super cheap guitars that amazed me.

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

I can't say as I've ever been jealous of a friend as regards gear, as the few guitar playing friends I do have don't really care about the 'gear' side of things.

But I have been jealous of friends that are better guitarists/singers/songwriters than I am, or of those that have gotten great opportunities from doing nothing than I have by working my nuts off and putting myself out.

Ah well :D

When I was starting to play, I was dying for a PRS. I told my dad I was gonna work all summer to buy one, doing whatever (I was 15 at the time). He goes, "Ok, you could do that and be a so-so player with a nice guitar, or spend your time playing and be a great player with an ok guitar."

Seeing as how I've never owned a PRS, you can see which made more sense to me :)

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

i see what you guys mean, i do not have any super nice gear, infact no guitar i even own is a major brand, with exception to my Ibanez and my Yamaha acoustics, but the Ibz is still a mid ranged instrument. Even before i owned any decent gear people would tell me that i had talent, the thing i always thought was funny is i suuuuccckkkkeeeeddd for the longest time since i started out on electric and i listend to alot of metal back then. About a year after i started i picked up one of my dads acoustics and magic happend. I stared playing more folk type music and eventually mixed that with metal, jazz, funk, and classic rock styles to make what i have now. I have never thought it but ever since then so many people tell me i am going to be famous...lol i still think its a joke but heres hoping. the truth is if the unlikely chance came along of me actually getting discovered i would use the money i made to open up a custom guitar shop... mostly to build my own guitars and make copies of the originals to sell. And i think i phrased my question wrong, i probibly should have said, "do you ever see your friends guitars and feel bad for the guitars?"

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Meh my friend's dad was a guitarist in the like 60's and 70's. Has a real 59 Les Paul with the PAF humbuckers and a custom shop goldtop with P90's and a 68 Telecaster and a custom shop Stratocaster and blah blah blah. The older dude's a mean guitarist who's been there and done that so his guitars totally suit him. My friend tho...sits in his room that literally hasn't been cleaned for two years, dirty dishes stacking up on top of the original JMP half stack, that vintage Tele just on the ground with like stacks of CDs and old video games piled on it cuz he can't play worth a ****...depressing.

but neither of them have a sweet green SG that they got at a bragain y'know? and neither of them can play riffs as heavy as mine (altho the older dude can play some seriously face-melting shred) so i don't let it stress me. To my friend, guitar is a beat-up hand-me-down from his dad's youth. To me, guitar is totally awesome and exciting and fun...all of our instruments reflect that and i don't think any of us really envy the other.

As much as i'd like that old Les Paul, I couldn't rock out with it like i do my SG...

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

My problem is that my friend knows what he has, does not sell his gear when he is in a tight spot, i.e will not sell it .... 1978 Tele, I know most of the late 70s Fender sucks, but that one i've played for two hours, it perfect, build like tank, neck to die for, slightly, elegantly scratched and dinted, he plays it on weakly basis, so its a live. And 1979 100watt JMP maintained by my guitar tech. Not a Marshall guy, but I am a JMP and JTM guy.

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Well, when I started hanging out with the jam crowd here (back in the '70's) we all just had one good guitar and amp and learned to use what we had, so we weren't jealous about gear--we were competitive about playing, though. We'd practice all week for those weekend jams.

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

When you are in a circle of people with better gear (the better distinction must be decided by the reader), it gives you more opportunity to capitalize on a moment of weakness, when they want to sell something at a killer discount.

Pounce on the opportunities when they arise, and are wise!:cool2:

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

Another good tip is to 'accidentally' injure or mangle the hands of your guitar playing friends. Y'know ask him to help build the tool shed then "OH NO MY POWERSAW IS MAKING ME RUN ACROSS THE YARD AT YOU ARRRGH" next thing you know, dude's sellin you that Gibson 1250 just to pay off his medical bills.

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

my friend ordered a phase 90..... and two of them got delivered, was alway a bit jealous of that :p

Re: Do you ever get jelous of your friends?

wow, what does he do with the other one? Does he run them one after the other, set up at differnt speeds that would be crazy? Kinda the same deal Tim Commerford does with 2 wah pedals one right after another. Actually kinda cool he used a piece of wood or somthing to connect the pedals so they are both used at the same time. Just listen to Bulls on Parade
