do you have to wax pot ?

Hello,

a friend of mine has replaced the 2 hb on his Epiphone Sheraton and went for the SH-1 ’59. Those two pu's came with no covers. After the fact, he decided to add some covers so he took his guitar to a store and was told they have to wax-pot the '59.

My question is why do you have to re-wax ? Does it have to do with adding some covers ? Or would it be ok to let them as is and just instal the covers.
I think he should have bought the one's with covers but it is too late now.

Thanks again for your replys.

Don.

Re: do you have to wax pot ?

I just added some covers to a pair of 59's, and didn't bother with any re-potting. Mine sound fine, even with very high gain.

I followed the advice of others on this forum and it worked out well. Mainly, 1: make sure to put a single piece of tape on the inside of the cover where the coil slugs are (obviously, not the screws. This helps to dampen any potential vibration), and 2: make sure to clamp the cover on tightly while soldering. You don't want this cover moving/vibrating.

LesPaulRules,

thanks for sharing your experience. My friend should have tried it first but decided to follow the store advice. So the guitar is gone since 3 weeks and he will have to pay for the work done wich i hope are not too expensive.
