Do you like your own playing?

Sometimes I do and think 'Did i do that'?

Other times I cringe and think' Did I really do that'?

How do you see your own stuff after a day or two and you've forgotten it?

Re: Do you like your own playing?

on the whole not really no. i havent done anything im 100 % happy with yet.

usually i'll lay something down and think yeah thats great.. play it back and think wtf was that lick or that was a really out of tune bend etc.

Re: Do you like your own playing?

I like it but I'm never ever complacent about it. There's always 100 things else I wish I could do but don't have the theory behind it.

Re: Do you like your own playing?

depends on my mood and how i feel when i pick up my axe. i'm a casual player cos i dont have a band and all i really do is play along records and somethimes write my own riffs.

if i'm warmed up and got that groove, isometimes really go, awesome! and then bum.. man i wish i had recorded that

on the other side, i start recording and then when i playback it's horrible =P

and i can never remember a solo or something if i dont write it down or have it recorded

Re: Do you like your own playing?

It's Sod's Law isn't it - you always do your best stuff when you aren't recording - then you forget it.

same here

everything i do is improvisation pretty much.

worse still than not recording is recording without tuning up.. :smack:

Re: Do you like your own playing?

i think its all in our minds guys.

i used to think i was pretty good when i got my digitech pedal (year and a half ago), tone and chops, but i found my old recordings on a CD yesterday and its embarrassing beyond belief... couldnt keep time at all and the tone was awful

Re: Do you like your own playing?

My playing improved a lot in the last two years, probably because I played more than ever before. Am I satisfied? I think I'll never be.

I think NOONE should be :) Where do you go when you're satisfied? Down.

Since I don't want to loose any great flash and forget them like anybody else, I hardly every give a shot at a back track without recording it... then I keep the small extracts I like best in a safe place. When I'm done, I redo the whole thing to see if it flows well. Sometimes it does, sometimes not. We are a very far cry from improvisation... but beleive me, it improved my playing a lot. Because now I remember my best chops, and I can insert them in real live improv.

Beleive it or not, some chops I did on the fly were not obvious even to me, I sometimes go "how did I do that?", and it can take me 5 minutes to relearn my own lick... because I don't remember anything about it, as if I was trying to learn another player's lick.

It just prove that music is in great part an intuitive process.

Re: Do you like your own playing?

For Rock stuff I am happy with my playing most of the time, everything else needs work.

Re: Do you like your own playing?

What a great question. On one hand, I can create a piece of music that's at least good enough that I, myself, can enjoy listening to it in the car. On the other hand, if I had applied myself, "back then", me and George, (Benson), could be releasing our 5th album together.

Now 'scuse me while I go kick myself . . . again. :smack:

Re: Do you like your own playing?

yeah i enjoy myself, sometimes i'll just get bored and put on some of my old clips and just rock out. i really dont care though

Same for me. Some days I'll record, listen back the next day and think "What the **** is this nonsense?" and delete it.

Re: Do you like your own playing?

Well just like you Lee,

sometimes I think 'wow did I do that'?

sometimes I think 'oh no! is that me'?

I'm never satisfied either but I can find peace in my best take on something as long as I keep my head pointed forward.

Re: Do you like your own playing?

I only hope to fit in.....my main enjoyment is the music that I play to.
Hmm I have fun when I play, and I like it best if I can capture the soul of the piece..not how I nailed that lick through that part using that backwards saltoflip skip shreddy sweeper tapping legato technique...;)
One or two good notes and it is a keeper!
:D

Re: Do you like your own playing?

I'm never really satisfied with my playing. I want to become as good as Paul Gilbert someday, that would be a dream come true!!!

Re: Do you like your own playing?

I do like my playing, I would say I am pretty happy. When I have a good song or riff, I play it till the dogs come home, then I tab it in guitar pro and record it. I have all my licks recorded and organized by opus. Try it sometime.

Re: Do you like your own playing?

i know your on 56k but i used to upload my stuff on 56 k while i eat or watched TV or something so no excuses man!

What does this have to do with playing/recording tips or sound clips?

What does it have to do with playing? I'm asking if you like your playing.

Where else would I ask about playing other than in the forum where we play?

I'm only interested in the question when it concerns known players - and this in the ONLY forum where players congregate.
