I just went into my sons room to retube his Ampeg J12-T 1x12. It was getting noisy, so I popped out all the Sovtek tubes and put two new JJ ECC83S in teh preamp and two new JJ EL84's in the power.
The little Ampeg eminence speaker sounds just fine. In fact, the amp sounds fricking awesome. So simple really. It has a 2 knob Trem and it has a one knob Reverb (both are solid state), one tone control and one volume control.
I ran his strat through it and cranked up the volume and man does this thing deliver a crunch that is a cross between vox and an 18 watt Marshall.
I know they're expensive new (like 450), but used for 250, buy it. You'll thank me later.
The biggest drawback I see is that the tube sockets are mounted directly to one of the circuit boards. Teh reverb is still a bit noisy, so I'm going to have to tear it open and look around. 5 year warranty so I might send it back in.
What a cool little amp. There's a reason why I've never sold it. What a great crunch for the house. I would say this is an excellent alternative to a Blues Jr. Sounds 10 times better over driven than the Fender. Hardly any noise at all until I turn up the reverb, but that is a new problem. Didn't do that when i first got it.
