Do you use compression the cleaner you play?

Re: Do you use compression the cleaner you play?

I love using a compressor with either my Tele or my Rickenbacker 330 to help even it out a bit for the cleaner thing. Really helps to even certain things out a bit.

I've been getting back into playing bass again lately and was having some fun the other day with my Jazz Bass going into the compressor. Had it set kinda high but it worked great for getting the kind of sound John Paul Jones had on "The Lemon Song." Made every note sound just as fat and tight as the next all up and down the neck.

I like the natural compression amps like AC30's give and find this sweet and loveable but i haven't heard much compression from a pedal that sounded the same especially seeming some artists seem to OVERuse it

Compressors are cool tools and have their place, but I think as your pick control improves you'll start playing cleaner and cleaner. And I think a compressor will squash some of the dynamic range you're enjoying now.

Re: Do you use compression the cleaner you play?

I just got my compressor about a week ago, still tweaking it of course. I find it to help tighten things up on the clean channel (all I use it for), you should have control over your synamics BEFORE you buy one but it does help to tighten things up a bit.

With that said, I'm always tweaking mine because I havent quite found my perfect setting, any tips on setting it up? I have an MXR Super Comp.

I sense a disturbance in the force......A young padawan is becoming a Jedi. :)

Garrett, I'm glad you are turning down the gain, you will get a much better sound with a lot more dynamics. As far as a compressor, I don't use one, but my little Blues Jr already compresses some on its own...with that big Super a little bit of compression would sound good.

You might also want to try the clean boost on that plexitone, it really opens up the cleans when it is used.
It is disturbing Joe :) As you know , I was without my Plexitone for awhile and this is when the change started. I just went without it and realized my amp had way more to offer than I had previously thought. You may be right though, a little compression may be good with my Rivera. Its can be loud and powerful, not much comp on the cleaner channel.
