Do you work on your guitars or do you hire a tech to work on your guitars?

Re: Do you work on your guitars or do you hire a tech to work on your guitars?

i do string changes and i've done a basic set up on a mim i once had. i don't think i would hesitate to try my skills on my sg, but i had it set up by a local tech and i don't think i could get it better than him. i'm also in the process of assembling a usacg tele that i'll get to finish, do electronics, and attempt to cut the nut on. it will still probably go to the local tech though since he's very good.

All right, just to stir things up for no good reason -- who here is man enough to confess you don't even change your own strings?

There are really people who don't change thier own strings? Seriously how much hassle is that! What happens if you break one on stage? Do you tune your own guitars?!

The local guitar tech charges $20 to tune guitars. So evidently some people don't even tune up themselves.

Go back and read the thread-starter's original post.

He doesn't change his own strings. Too scary. What if he messes something up?

its my job.

I do everything but fret work. I don't have the tools and the infrequent need I have for fret work just doesn't justify the cost.

Nuts, tuners, setups, electronics and most recently finishing I do myself. I will have a few examples of my stuff to show off in the next few weeks.

Re: Do you work on your guitars or do you hire a tech to work on your guitars?

In the past, I've done my own setup work. Recently I found a guy who is much better than me at it. One of my goals is to get my axes playing as well as he can. Electronics work...I'd never let anyone else do my guitar wiring. I'm very particular about the parts and the soldering and I've had bad experiences with techs who wouldn't do what I asked (like using the pots I wanted, etc).

I've changed my strings from day one, but if someone has the money to burn and it doesn't interfere with playing time so be it. I do think it's a huge waste to have someone else do it though, at least in my case.

I do everything except fretwork and nutwork...I leave that to professionals.

I've always done set ups, and simple stuff, like changing pickguards, adding trem springs and setups, but only recently have I started wiring pickups. It's much more satisfying to do it yourself. There's a whole host of reasons why it's better to do it yourself anyway.
