Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

It's obvious if you go to a guitar store that the 7-string "fad" has gone away. There is no more selection on hand, unless you are looking for used. I bought my 7-string because I wanted tuning versitility and ease without having to completely change my guitar around, tuning wise. But I'm just wondering, do any of the people who bought 7-strings still own them, and if so, why?

I know that Korn, Unearth, Dream Theater, Deftones, Trapt, and Soilwork (at times) Still use them extensively.

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

I one of those people who would love to own a 7 stringer but the problem is that i can never find any. I mean even when they were popular i still never saw more then a handfull. If i ever found one that wasn't crappy basswood i'd buy it.

Yep, I for one am still here. I play 7-string guitars.

The thing is, people in general just don't buy them. I call that their loss, but it does mean that choice is more limited. This unfortunately extends to pickups; I like active pickups, but without going to a custom shop (e.g. SD) the only active 7-string pickups around are EMG 707s, which aren't standard size.

A common misperception is that seven-string guitars can't be versatile - there's all the regular 6 strings there, plus an extra one??

Another one is baritone guitars - I'm starting on a project to build one at the moment.

One of my favourite arguments against baritone guitars is people claiming that you lose out on 'range' because you 'don't have the high E string'. This is of course cr@p - compare a 24 fret baritone guitar tuned (say) BEADGB (low to high) with a standard six string tuned EADGBE (low to high) - the distance from the lowest note to the highest note is exactly the same in both cases. Sure, you lose 5 notes from the top end with a baritone, but you gain 5 notes on the bottom end.

But with a seven string, you get both.

Anyway, there will always be Warmoth if 7-string guitars die out.

This question gets asked once every year or so ... and yes they do.

Interestingly enough there seems to be a real increase of Archtop (y'know Jazz types) Seven strings which is pretty interesting. Cool to see it return to the music that spawned the 7 string in the first place.

And yes I still play mine

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

Yeah, I have a 7 string epiphone les paul. Still have it because it plays well, was my first guitar, looks good, I like the feel of the neck, with the dimarzio PAFs it has plenty of mids but is a bit twangy, it's a good guitar. I used to use the 7th string when I jammed with friends doing korn and slipknot but not so much anymore. The 7th string doesn't get in my way at all when I'm not using it.

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

I have quite enough trouble with six strings thank you very much.

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

I have a 7 string and I still play it, not as much as my LP, I'm planning on building a 7 String Baritone too (Warmoth), that'll be interesting, gonan take a while though...

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

A buddy of mine just got a 7-string acoustic 'cause he's getting into jazz. It's pretty weird since he has mostly shred guitars.

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

I have an Ibanez GRX 7 string I bought to get into 7 String guitars. It's in near mint condition despite a small ding on the side. I never use it. Actually considering selling it because it just never gelled with my playing style. Believe me, I'd love to use a 7 string... but for my style it just didnt work well.

I've barely picked it up in the past year and a half. I guess if anyone wants to buy it, shoot me a private message.

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

after i found out korn used them i stopped wanting one, silly reason but nonetheless

plus i hate wide necks, and don't really have a use for those extra 5 notes, I don't even play in drop D most of the time

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

I unloaded my last one about 6 months ago. I went through a ton of them voer a few years; Ibanez RG7620 and a RG7420, an ESP H-207, a Schecter C-7+ and a Universe.

They were decent guitars and I loved the larger necks on them. But it just wasn't what I was evolving into playing. I recognized that I just wasn't playing the kind of music I'd purached them with the intention of playing and were spending more time sitting and collecting dust than getting used. So they got sold.

Same with the amps as well. Almost a year ago I bought a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue and it was the beginning of the end; I unloaded every amp I owned but that and have since picked up a handfull of other amps.

I picked up a few more guitars since then but they all get played pretty regularly.

I think for me it was an evolutionary thing. I was evolving into another player and didn't need the tools of the previous player I had tried to be.

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

If I had it my way, my entire gigging rig of guitars would be 7 stringers. I absolutely love them.

I bought into that 'fad' back in '99, when I was jamming with some friends who wanted to do some Korn tunes. I bought the 7 string just for that so I wouldn't have to tune my other guitars down a 5th and really screw up the intonation. I took the guitar out to one practice, and then they didn't want to play anymore. Bastards.

It saw a lot of case time from then on until about three years ago when I was introduced to Dream Theater. Now I'm one 7 string richer, and they're both on my multi-stands right now.

I do need some new pickups in my Universe though. I ****ing hate Blaze pickups. :D

How old are you? I don't mean offense by this, but I'm asking because most people who play 7s didn't likely know they existed pre-Korn. And, BTW, Korn playing 7s was the best thing to happen for the rest of us, because it lead Ibanez, Schecter, etc... to start making them for less than a grand.

+1.

A 7 string is on my list of guitars to get, But all ones i've tried i didnt really like (universe, K7).
Maybe a JP musicman 7string is what i need... :saeek:

I'd rather a booteek amp rig (see link below) before I get a 7string..

Re: Does anybody play 7-strings anymore?

Still a 7-stringer. I didn´t buy it just because they were en vogue a few years ago but I thought an additional string should be fun to play. And it is.
