Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

Or is it just me?

Not being sarcastic here, for some reason I just LOVE when my fingers get all kinds of raw and tender then just doing massive bends and stuff. I tend to use heavier strings because of it (12s for guitar 50s for bass).
Obviously it's an obstacle when playing but I don't know. There is just something I like about it.

Edit: This pic is from a while ago and my fingers are no longer like this. Funny enough they have gotten this bad but I have still never bled from it.

Ok my fingers have never been THAT bad..... But I do enjoy the tender feeling after a nice long jam session

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

Me too! I rarely get to play and if I get sore fingers, that means I had a good jam session! I never had fingers torn up that bad, but when I first got back into playing after an 11 yr break, I had sore fingers alot and got some thick callouses on my tips.

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

My fingers haven't had issues since any time after the first ~year I started playing. When I first started, I would sometimes put band aids on my fingers (a la Yngwie and others) so I could keep practicing, but after they toughened up, they stayed that way for good. :D

My speed doesn't really diminish too much in spite of neglect either, although my precision and endurance can definitely fade if I don't practice! :crying:

@OP, Man, you just have the bad habit of eating your own skin. This cant be cause by strings alone. If you play intensively then a thick hardened layer of skin should be formed on your finger tips that should make them very robust against any minor injury.

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

No, torn up fingers hurt. The idea is to play often enough that you have enough calluses to prevent that from happening.

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

Egad! You mean I have been doing this wrong the whole time?!
I should further clarify that this picture was taken years ago. And if I had a habit of eating my own skin then I would go for the belly first. More tender. Of course it's painful, but it (to me) is also satisfying in a weird way. The same way picking a scab or biting your lip is satisfying.

You are looking for a fetish/masochism Website, not the SDUGF.

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

Nooo, I don't like it. But it happens. The number one thing about it I don't like is I need to heal before I can play again. I don't like anything that stops me from playing. The second worst to raw fingertips is when my fingernails on the edge get sanded down to the flesh by downstrokes or strumming the strings to where it's like hitting a raw blister with cheese cutter wire.

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

Something ive noticed a few years ago was that even if i go a week or 2 without playing I still cannot feel very well with the tips of the fingers on my left hand. I came to the realization when a friend of mine was teaching me to do body work and said to feel for how smooth the metal was with my left hand because it wasnt my dominant hand and would be more sensitive. I laughed and told him that years of guitar playing have ruined that for me.

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

I have hardly any feeling in the tips of my fret fingers. I could lay them on a hot stove and not feel it for a bit-but, I 've been playing for 45 years, My fingers look like they have been doing the walking through the yellow pages, almost flat fingered!

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

My right hand takes more of a beating then my left(I'm right handed) I use heavier strings as well. 11's on electrics and 13's on acoustics. On acoustic I rarely use a pick and after about 1½ hours my index finger gets a bit tender, but aside from that my fingers are smooth. I find I have less trouble bending and playing clean whenmy fingertips are smooth. When they do get torn up I us an emery board to sand them smooth.

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

I used to practice 4-5 hours a day leading up to and through university. It's gotten to the point now where I've accidentally burned my fingertips with boiling water several times without noticing until I see how red the skin has turned. I haven't felt anything in my fingertips on my fretting hand for years.

Re: Does anyone else LOVE the feeling of torn up fingers?

when i was starting out, i believe i used liquid bandages (you know... the brush on kind) on my fingertips to create a little bit of a buffer between skin and strings. also, switching to a lower gauge string and having your guitar set up good can help with this, the heavier the string and the more tension, the more prone your skin is to tear and break.
