Does the calibrated SSL-4 set come in a tapped version?

Re: Does the calibrated SSL-4 set come in a tapped version?

I haven't seen a tapped set available. Doesn't mean you couldn't put one together, though. I would think that a tapped rw/rp QP for the middle would be a Custom Shop item, though.

You can create a tapped effect by wiring it with a spin-a-split.

Definitely an option. I owned one once. (That is the RWRP middle pup.)

This is what lead to the creation of my spin-a-phase wiring diagram. Ground the "tap" wire. Take the black and white wires to each end of a linear pot. The wiper becomes the output, and you can dial from one phase to the other. In practice, it was quite anti-climatic, so it didn't last long in my guitar. But it is do-able. ;)

P.S. The "tapped" option is available for all three positions.

Awesome! I learned something today! I haven't seen a tapped set, though.

Re: Does the calibrated SSL-4 set come in a tapped version?

I could just make my own set by buying the appropriate pickups separately, but the word “calibrated” gets me. Does it make that much of a difference?

Also, despite all I’ve read about players loving their 3xQP Strats, I have considered they maybe it’d be too much. The SD page recommends pairing with SSL-5s in the middle and neck, but would that be too much of an output mismatch? What if the QP bridge were tapped and selected together with the mid position custom? Mismatch?

You're over analyzing this. Buy one. Listen to it. If you like it, buy another. If you don't . . . two won't sound better.

I might pair the tapped QP with a Five Two, or even SSL-2s. I don't know if I'd go for an SSL-5/6 or 3 QPs.

Not that easy, I'm afraid. I live in a place where I can't easily get quality musical instruments, and the guitar I plan to put them in doesn't exist yet. Still planning, and I want to make sure I'm starting from a place that I understand, and that others can verify is a solid starting point.

I've had a single QP in the bridge position before, and loved it. At the time, it was paired with some cheap stock pickups. I'm mostly unclear about this pickup's interaction with other pickups.

If I don't like it, it could be a looooooong time before I can do anything about it.

Is your reason for this something that you can put into words, or is it more of a "you'd have to hear it" kinda thing? :nervous:

Oh man. I'm sorry. I didn't mean my answer to sound that cold-hearted. Sometimes I forget that we all live in different environments. :blackeye:

Nah, no worries! Go figure: I finally have the disposable income to be making instrument purchases, and I end up living in a place that's notorious for fake goods and import hassles :17:

But I bet you get good bonafide Chinese food. ;)

I think the balance and clarity is better with the lower output options.
