Doesn't sound right

can somebody please tell how at the :12 mark those taps are done with the pick, and what I'm doing wrong? Am trying to learn this solo, is one of my favs, but for some reason whenever I try that, it sounds really tinny and you can hear the string popping back. Have watched about fifteen different people play it and it sounds fine, so WTF?? I am using my neighbor's POS Samick, so if it's the guitar, then cool, but if it's technique it's really bothering me...

ps - not me, I only wear socks on my feet.

Re: Doesn't sound right

Try this: instead of tapping with the pic across the string, try coming down right on top of the string.

Simple, and you might already be doing this. First thing I could think of though.

Re: Doesn't sound right

If you can play that solo, kudos to you! Bratta's guitar parts are total nut-busters.

Never said I CAN play it, said I am trying to LEARN it. Wish I could just fire it off like that, am still going a little slow with it, trying to get it right first, fast second. And fo 'sho, Vito is one of my favorite guitarists, but he's a biatch to play. Cheesey band, incredible player.

Re: Doesn't sound right

dunno, I doubt I could play hardly any of that solo.

I'm not one for the pick-tapping thing, but when goofing around, I have to really tense up my arms to generate enough force for it to work.

Re: Doesn't sound right

High frets will definately help you to avoid flubbing notes, but great technique should make fast passages possible as long as the guitar isn't completely fretless . . . make sure to choke up on your pick as well, as this gives you a lot more control. (A heavy pick is a good idea too.) Tap just behind the fret, and mute all the other strings with your right hand palm/wrist . Most importantly, play the part SLOWLY. If you hear ANY flubs, you need to slow it down . . . increase the tempo only to the point that you can no longer hear any playing mistakes.

if that's the case, I need to play EVERYTHING slower :lmao:

thanks, though. I think it has more to do with the high action than anything. I don't have an electric guitar of my own right now, and am used to playing one with much lower action and speedier (Gibson Flying V). His is higher than my acoustic, even. So part of it is that it's a biatch to play to begin with, part of it is I need a guitar that I can actually play faster on, too. Will keep practicing it, if I ever get mine fixed or get a new one, maybe it will all come together, eh?

Re: Doesn't sound right

give the string a bit of a flick with the finger/pick you're pulling off of the string with.

+1

As he takes the pick off the string, he's adding energy for the fingered notes to ring out as loud as the hammer ons.
