D'oh! Did I screw up? An ongoing pickup saga...

OK so I'm still a pickup noob but I've learned a fair amount very quickly thanks to the friendly, well spoken folks here. Many thanks to them.

I've been doing this guitar tonequest too long to be patient... and I've got two recording sessions already booked this summer! There is no time for caution and that might have cost me a goofed order...

In the search to find THE tone I ordered a CC online @ zzounds and an EVH direct from SD. Go ahead call me crazy! Some people are saying they are so close it doesn't matter, others deny this entirely... both pups sound like things I want and I have two guitars that really need an upgrade... both Carvins. I love their guitars but not the pups. So that explains the madness part I.

My actual problem is that after talking to MJ about the EVH I realize that my CC may not be the right CC for me. You see I'd like to be able to split the CC... how can I tell if I can? MJ asked me if I'd want to be able to split the EVH and I said yes. This lead to a four versus two pole config if I am remembering correctly. She was friendly as others have said but I was getting harassed by co-workers while trying to order and stupidly forgot to ask her.

Last part of the story, right now I've got a new zebra CC sitting across from me. I hope to swap it in this weekend. The EVH won't be here for a month, sigh, so I'll have time to get to know the CC before swapping in the EVH and compare how they are different and learn which is best for my #1 guitar. I am REALLY stoked for this experiment. My inner nerd and my outer six string wanker find harmony together at times like this.

So to repeat a little - are there two versions of the CC? One splitting and one not or are most four pole and its one of the luxuries of custom shop orders that you can pick all the details? I did go back to the zzounds website and its pretty light on details, so I did try before asking here and I learned a lesson!

I am a noob here but I appreciate the effort people have put in on a strangers behalf. I'll be recording in a pro studio with the exact same rig (Carvin CT4 maybe a couple boutique pedals and a VHT Deliverance 1/2 stack) EXCEPT for the pickup swap. Two weeks from now will be the CC and the june session will be EVH. I will post clips here of the CC vs the EVH for the curious both in mix and in isolation.

So once again, thanks!

Paul

i am pretty sure that all CCs are 4-wire ... the only 'versions' of a CC would be trem spaced or not and different colors

MY shop floor custom CC is tremspaced but has 2 rows of screws :D

T4d,

Thanks! Thats reassuring. Why did you go custom CC? What did it add for you?

Thanks,

i got to make it myself last year at SDUG day ... was very fun to do ... a second row of screws just provides the opportunity to tweek the response that much more ...

it's a bat ears kinda thing :D

The CC comes stock with 4-conductor wire. You can order it with 2-conductor if you want but that would be a shop floor custom. You want the 4-conductor.

If you want the EVH in 4-conductor as well, just call up MJ and make sure that's on your order.

Re: D'oh! Did I screw up? An ongoing pickup saga...

Yep. As others have said, it should be 4-conductor and splittable. It sounds great that way, might I add.

I'm really interested to see what you decide about the differences in those two pups. It sounds like you've got a pretty good A/B situation, so I'm looking forward to your review.
