Heya all

so on the wekend I'm gonna rewire my tele style to put a HB in the neck to match an alt8 . this guitar currently has no tone pot and a dodgey switch so I've got all the parts to rewire it all and add a tone pot. have swapped pot's ,PU's and switchs seperataly but never all together in 1 big job .

I grabbed a .022 and a .047 cap cause I wasnt sure what I wanted to use . I know the lower value is brighter from reading on the forum but what im not sure about is does the cap value effect the brightness with the tone pot on 10 or is it only the way it rolls off with the value changes ?

no matter which cap you have it doesn't effect the tone when on 10. although if you cut the cap out of the circuit or install a "no load pot" the guitar will be somewhat brighter.

You may have to (probably will have to IME/IMO) go lower than .022 to get full use out of the entire swing of your tone pot. Keep going lower and lower until 0/1 on the tone pot is a tone that you might actually use from time to time. I have realized that for what I like, I need to use .01 as a starting point, and go down from there if needed. 0.022's are usually only good for me down to about 4 or 5 on the tone pot. After that, the tones become too muffled to be useful to me. Everyone needs different things, though, so do your own experiments.

The cool thing is that you can buy nothing but a bag of cheap .022 caps to settle on a rough value. For instance, you can connect two of them in series to reduce the total value to .011, or two in parallel to increase it to .044. Those are close enough to .01 and .047 that you can hear what they sound like, and know what caps to buy in the future.

thanks guys. to be honest I'm not much of a tone pot user.I use my volume a fair bit but not the tone . which was why I was wondering about the on 10 thing. reson I'm putting one is I find neck HB's a bit too bright without a tone pot where bridge I like the aggression

If you are not much of a tone pot user, I'd go straight for a no load pot with a .01, or even lower value, cap on it. That way most of the time you can run with the pot bypassed, but if you do want to use it from time to time, you have a cap that gives you a fairly mild effect.

I thought about that but I only have 1 vol 1 tone and the neck HB is just too bright for the clean sounds I like to use without a tone pot in my past experience.

I hear ya, I dont like bright neck pickups either. If you find it too bright without a tone pot, adding a no load pot isn't going to help you as thats what a no load pot does, bypasses the tone pot on "10".

Adding a tone pot and any value cap will darken up the tone a bit.

what value pots are you using and which humbucker do you have in the neck?

I've got 500k pots and I'm putting a 59n with an A4 mag in it into the neck to try . Had this PU in my other guitar before I got my BKP set and always loved it

If it doesnt work well in this guitar I'll buy something else but i think it will .

Think I'll put in the .02 cap just cause if I do roll off keeping it brighter is what I'll want
