Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

Im considering making one, ive priced it out and its gunna cost me around 450-500 to build. I've always wanted one, what do you guys think? for a 6th of the price of a gibson? cant beat that.

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

It would be cool to have one, but it seems like restringing it would be too much of a pain. If I had a roadie, I'd definetely get one. :)

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

If i had a roady.. id probably tell him to scram.. i dont like people fiddling with my stuff haha

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

I agree it's always something you think about peripherally, but few take the plunge and spend the money. I always thought that if I were to have one it would be because I had spare parts around.

Definitely make one if you're thinking about it. Even if you get bored with it the build process and initial payoff of playing it will make it worth it. Like I said, few take the plunge so if you have the urge, take action fast!

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

i think im gunna do it, screw the strat idea. the only single coils i really are p90s anyways.

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

I've never wanted one at all but I agree with Frank. If you're thinking about it then you should do it.

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

It seems like more of a novelty to me, but if you want one then go for it. Make it your way and play the heck out of it!

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

Few guitarists have ever looked as cool on-stage as Slash or Pagey with their doublenecks. That's mainly what it's about. If you realize that it's going to be heavy and impractical compared to your other guitars, and you still want it anyway, then I say go for it.

Few guitarists looks as cool on stage as Slash or Pagey full stop. Most mere mortals will look like an idiot sporting a double neck, and if youre not even going to be ON a stage, a double neck is a crazy idea.

But yes, deep down I want one too. :14:

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

Page and Slash may look cooler, but Steve Howe and John McLaughlin really played the hell out of those things, and did music that actually required a double neck. Me, I am too practical- I don't want to carry, store or restring one. Besides, you can get the same sound these days with a Variax.

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

I tried a double neck out a couple of times in a guitar shop and it felt too cumbersome to play. The 12 string neck was so high, and the 6 string one was too low to reach. Niether one was at a comfortable height.
So I eventually ordered this:

I probably still should have snagged at least one double neck. IIRC correctly, one was a Gibson 1275-whatever, in the late 80's, priced cheap because everyone just wanted Kramers and Jacksons. The other opportunity I passed on was one of the Ibanez replicas of John McLaughlin's doubleneck, also priced dirt cheap. Those have also appreciated in value in the years since then.

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

i have roughed out 2 double neck strats from lumber... a Mahogany one and a Basswood one... the mahogany one is quite heavy... i copied the design from Warmoth who copied the design from the Fender Custom Shop... i have a 12 string neck and a 6 string neck all ready for final shaping... used Warmoth truss rods, hard maple and rosewood boards... oneday when i'm less lazy i'll complete these massive tasks... LOL

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

guy i'm going to see play tonight uses 2 OLP double necks... but he has totaly modded the hell out of his... basicly he took both 6 string necks on one and both 12's on the other... then he has added some weird ass locking trems i can't remember seeing before as well as a drop d tuner on one... added EMG's... only thing left stock is the wooden parts...

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

It would be a cool guitar to compare pickups. Test them side by side. Fun times for all!

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

gretsch makes one with a baritone rather than a 6 string

Also, Mahavishnu Orchestra FTW

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

Who makes this??
Veillette Guitars
A great USA guitar maker, making high end guitars since the 70's.
I like the idea of not playing the same guitar that all the other guys on the block are playing.
Their doubleneck apparently has some cool innovations that the other guys didn't think of.

Re: Double-necks, we all want one deep down..

The Peavey Hydra doubleneck was really small and easy to reach both necks.

You want cumbersome, try a tripleneck.
