DR Strings for Floyd Rose

Re: DR Strings for Floyd Rose

So you're suggesting that somehow the ball has a more detrimental effect on the tuners than say oh i dunno, wound wire?

I'm not sayin' anything, I'm just sayin', if there was a better way, the people who build the instruments would probably have heard of it or come up with it themselves in the 54+ years solid body electrics have been built, and put it in all their guitar manuals. Hey you can store your guitar in acid if you feel like it. It's a free country. I just ain't stringing that way. I just felt there is a chance it may dent or peel chrome from the peg, so I don't want to take that chance. Me, I want to keep my instruments as pristine as possible. I may need to sell my guitars some day. Who knows what the future holds.

As a wise man once said "If the mountains fell in the sea, it ain't me,...Cuz' I got my own world to live through and I ain't gon' copy you."

So you guys that are stringing them backwards, are you saying that you still cut some excess off the strings?

Re: DR Strings for Floyd Rose

There are some seriously disrespectful attitudes flying around from both noobs and people that should know better.

Re: DR Strings for Floyd Rose

i slide the string through backwards measure the string out to the end of the saddle screw and cut it. It's actually the perfect measurement. Gives me enough for a fews turns around every time.

As far as chipping the chrome or paint and scratching the hole the only way this would happen is if the ball was moving around. The nifty thing with stringing it backwards is that the ball locks right into the hole and since the ball is there that string isn't moving once you wind it around even once. I've sold 5 guitars this year. Not one complaint that the tuners showed the slightest sign of wear. I had each of those guitars for a minimum of 2 years one I had for 10.

Just an FYI.

Yeah, that's what I do. I basically straighten the string out flat on the trem, and cut it to length about where it touches up to the fine tuners. Then I put it in the clamp and tighten it up. With that length it's only a few turns on the tuning peg and you're set. Less string on the tuning peg will mean less relaxation of the string and easier initial tuning before you lock 'er down. So far I haven't had any problems with the tuning pegs being damaged or anything. My little sons like to touch the guitars while I'm playing and having no pointy razor sharp strings is a nice thing.

Alright. So I guess it gets back to the original question. Have any of you noticed any problems with the DR strings unwinding? This one was my first set (they're on the planet waves auto-trim tuners, so they were crimped at the cut), and I know a few people that use them without problems, but I'm still wondering if it's ever been a problem or if they're just covering their butts in case something strange does happen.

Haven't noticed any problems when cutting the pointy ends. However, if you decide to cut the ball end it might be prudent to cut them a few inches above to bypass that braided zone.

Not me. On some strings, the winding doesn't go all the way to the end, so I cut the core off until I have pure winding. However, the wound DR's have the winding going all the way to the end, so I just stick it in the locking saddle and clamp down.
