you guys into them? my preferred local shop is now a dealer.

I've been using Elixirs mostly, does DR make a decent coated string?

Re: DR strings

I used Black Beauties for a while.
Broke 4 different strings over 6 days - two high E's, a G and a D
I use D'addarrio's now.

Re: DR strings

Ive always wanted to use the colored ones, but hear the color flakes off rather quickly. Shame, but doesnt suprise me unless they start anodizing them.

Only time Ive ever broken a D addario is when Ive done something Stoopid

Re: DR strings

I tried the pure blues(I think that's what they were) same thing. I broke three strings in like a week. D'Addario for me!

Re: DR strings

I've never tried them. I have to admit that I've always been confused. Is DR. Strings an actual medical doctor?

Re: DR strings

I have never had a problem with DR strings... They are my favorites...

They feel great, have more sustain than Daddarios.... etc. Just better strings...

Re: DR strings

DR Strings are good stuff man.

Actually, my band is endorsed by them. Only reason I don't use them at the moment though, is cuz they don't have any 11-52 sets (which is my preferred gauge).

I have to use D'Addario XLs 11-52, and I have to buy wound 3rds separately (another personal preference).

Re: DR strings

Some people love 'em, and they certainly can offer a different feel and tone which others don't. Personally though, in the few hundred DR sets I've installed I have found way more quality control issues than with pretty much any other brand, easily 10x or more than companies like D'addario, GHS, Dean Markley, Ernie Ball, etc.

I run in to stuff like this all the time -

DRstring.jpg

Loose or uneven windings, often found in a consistent repetitive pattern indicating some issue with a particular tool or spooling method, which can lead to chronic intonation issues.

I'd really love to love them, but with the high rate of defective strings I've encountered I just can't. It's been a couple of years since I really gave them a fair shot, and maybe these issues have finally been remedied, I don't know. I hope so, but I found problems for so long that I just don't feel like betting my own money on it.

Re: DR strings

DR are the best strings you can get. They are tighter wound than most other brands so they have more material in the strings which mean you A) don't chew up your frets and fingers and B) don't have to use telegraph wire to get tone.
The colourd strings are maybe a bit gimmicky but the normal ones are great.

You do have to look for holograms on the box as they have been victims of faking recently.

Yes they do in the DDT range.

Re: DR strings

Some time in the past couple of years The Internet decided that DRs had terrible QC and tended to break, so now whenever they're mentioned, those are the stories that come trotting out.

Personally, I haven't had any significant troubles with the dozens of sets I've installed over the past 7 years or so (didn't discover the brand until 2003).

For Bass, their Fat Beams are my preferred string. For guitar, well, I've used both the Tite-Fits and the Pure Blues on several different instruments and... I like D'addario better. Nothing to do with quality, tuning or breakage. I just like the feel and sound of the EXLs more.

Re: DR strings

I used the Pure Blues for a long time and I had pretty good luck with them. I did have a period of time where I had some issues with them, wasn't breakage it was corrosion in the package that was my problem. They said they fixed the issue but I never went back, stayed with D'Addario.

Just found out a friend does a lot of print work for them so he is trying to get me some to use and entice me back. I used to work for the D'Addario's ages ago and they are a Long Island company so really I don't have a desire to switch back.

Re: DR strings

Astro, try the set with Dime on the front. They're treated, but not "coated in junk" treated. I think its a regular 10-42 set. I used them for a looong time and never had issues. They always seemed to keep their tone longer, could be the treatment I guess. They're worth a shot if you ask me

Re: DR strings

I tried them for a while and they broke a lot. It was funny, I was expecting to be the only person who was going to say that, but it seems that several others have shared my experience.

I have a permanent scar on my wrist from a DR string - a wound G snapping off my Strat, when I was SRVannabe-ing and playing 13-56s, and quite literally slitting my wrist. It bled a lot and was kind of hard to get under control. I was at band practice in a garage and it looked like somebody cut a chicken's head off in there.

If we ever meet in person, I will show you guys the scar.

This old guitar tech said one time he had a pack of ernie ball acoustic strings that he was putting on a guitar for someone, he said the G string broke and shot into his skin. He said he pulled it out and it was in about 1/4 inch. That probably hurt like a *****.
