Drop In High Output Humbuckers

I'm looking for replacement pickups (bridge in particular) for a Gibson LPJ. I'm playing through a 2204 and want a pickup that really drives the front end of the amp. Will be playing mainly 80's inspired thrash. I've tried EMG's but found them too dry and thin. Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks

Distortion, Black Winter, if you find EMG's weak and lacking character then you gotta aim at something really hot like the Dimebucker, Slug, Lace Deathbucker or Blackouts

There are several threads about them hear. They are everything you need them to be...utterly singular in sound and feel. They are at the same time hard, nasty, mean, clean, beautiful and soooooooo good.

That's my two cents.

I have an '88 2204 and it loves my Winters.

The Black Winters are a good choice, as is something like a Custom in the bridge. The BWs are a wee bit on the modern side, so if you dig a little of that, then there ya go.

Try a Fralin High Output/Pure PAF set. Lots of warmth with an A4 in the bridge and an A2 in the neck. They will really punch the front of your amp. The nice thing is they have tons of sustain and really sing on leads. This isn't thrash but it will give you an idea of their voicing. This is straight into a Marshall no effects. I typically play metal and they do the job, this is just me noodling around with them.

Not huge on the modern sound to be honest. Appreciate the input. How would you describe the Custom? I heard Gary Holt used these for a bit, can anyone confirm? I'm not trying to get an Exodus tone by any means, just curious.

Where I live (small town in Canada) it can be hard to get brands like that, and there is no way of getting a hold of any to try. Sounded cool though. Thanks

The Duncan SH-6b is a good one. I have it in a PRS SE Singlecut and like it very much.

Balances nicely with the stock neck pickup in that guitar and also cleans up nicely when I turn down the guitar's volume control.

I like the treble response from this pickup. It's toothy and textured and not so smooth that it sounds bland.

It's similar to a JB in terms of output but it's easier on my ears and more textured and pleasant.

I'm selling it though.

I put Tom Holmes humbuckers in this guitar and so the Distortion that the guitar came with has been removed and is for sale. $45. including shipping.

Have you used a JB in the past? The specs show the JB and Distortion being quite similar. I had a JB in another guitar for a while (because Mustaine used it) it was great for leads but I found it lacking on the rhythm end. In my opinion it wasn't chunky or tight enough.

well i was going more for a chainsaw type tone than for a traditional thrash tone, something like a in between of dimebag and scott ian, but you get the idea of how the dimebucker can sound

The Custom is huge...think 90s modern rock. Huge power chords that hit you in the chest. Great for bands with one guitar. To me, it takes up a lot of sonic space, and is one of my favorite higher-output humbuckers.
